Sometimes I write intimate eschatologies or words about technology and math. Sometimes I make things by burning them with light or squeezing them through a small, hot tube. Sometimes I push water with a stick while sitting in a tiny boat.

OMFG, this Mountain Dew × FFXIV thing is so much more extra than I even realized. There's even custom keycaps?

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

That is such an incredibly niche shirt, but then they just went on and made it anyway. Like fuck brands, but that's legit funny.

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

On the other hand, I shudder to think of how much soda you need to drink (the codes are under the lids) to get those. The Stream Deck and microphone combo are like 125 to 250 bottles, the keycap sets are 90 to 180 bottles each, etc.

That's... a lot of soda.

I quite enjoyed Neurodiver, but it felt really short somehow? Not in the gamerbro not-enough-hours sense, but just that the story pacing felt like it went into overdrive towards the end?

To be sure, definitely good and quite adorable, just the one surprise with it, I guess.

oh hell yes. i think i just found the original typeface used: it was LTC Spire by the Lanston Type Company

edit: it led to a fascinating web preservation backstory about the origins of the font itself:

@vga256 That looks a lot like the Final Fantasy logo font as well? IIUC, that one is a modification of or is very similar to Monotype's Runic family.

@vga256 The same logo in Runic, fwiw:

today's helldivers 2 discovery: it has an unlockable revolver. makes sense, right? lots of games do.

you fire six out of six shots and reload. your character uses a speedloader. makes sense!

you fire two shots and reload.

  • if you're in a fight, your character uses a speedloader, and you lose four
  • if you're not, they reload it round by round, and you lose none

this is an incredible level of attention to detail holy shit. nobody does this!!

@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

@whitequark Damn, that's amazing. Also really interesting way of doing game balance?

Today in motorcycle adventures:

  • Got honked at for not making a left turn through a pedestrian-filled crosswalk.
  • Got flipped off by a Tesla for not merging into traffic where there was no room, and where a police officer was immediately adjacent.
  • Passed a car with an extremely sun-faded "baby on board, keep your distance" bumper sticker.
  • Made the mistake of thinking the I-5 south would be faster than Aurora south.
  • Got a lot of compliments and/or waves from other motorcyclists.

All in all, a pretty positive outing.

Oh, I forgot: was very thankful for a face shield when someone in the next lane over ran over wood debris and sent splinters flying at my face. Proper safety gear is an absolute must.

"Under Nabiha’s ambitious leadership, she will carry forward the collective power of the Mozilla community to help steer society away from the real risks and towards the benefits of trustworthy AI."

Oh, fuck me.

Can someone please stop this ride? I just want off.

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

In the last 36 hours, Slack has handed everything over to LLMs, Proton Mail (!) has sent out a survey about AI, and Mozilla Foundation has doubled down harder than ever on pretending that AI can ever be "trustworthy."

It's all so exhausting.

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

I guess the Slack thing is older, but just getting news coverage now? The point still stands, regardless.

plants are fucked up. like... as a concept

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

@whitequark They just kind of grow new parts whenever and wherever they need them. It's... disturbing.

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

@whitequark Also, like when is a plant "dead"? We cut a tree once when I was a kid, and the log just kept growing new roots somehow.

Cursed??? C# question:

We have a ProjectName.csproj with a <PropertyGroup><OutputType>Exe</OutputType></PropertyGroup>. Running at the command line, we can successfully run it with dotnet run on Mac, Linux and Windows. On Mac, we can open it in VS Code, hit "Run", and it runs.

On Windows in VS Code only, if we open it and click the run button, it builds a .DLL instead of a .EXE as its final build output and then fails with a message that you cannot run a .DLL.

Why, and how do we not?

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

@mcc Effectively, .NET DLLs and EXEs both are ECMA 335 containers with one or more .NET types. The main difference is whether it has a PE-formatted stub that calls into mscoree.dll or not.

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

@mcc At least (1) came down to making .NET cross-platform, where the PE stub trick made a lot less sense. (2) sounds like the normal Microsoft bullshit of assigning bafflingly weird tasks to competent and skilled designers and engineers, then hoping something sensible emerges.

xgranade,
@xgranade@wandering.shop avatar

@mcc (As an addendum, the PE stub trick also hard-codes a dependency on .NET Framework and not .NET Core or .NET. Because yes, that's what Microsoft did with those names. Sigh.)
