Two questions for people who follow me on Mastodon:
(1) What - in your opinion - is the biggest problem in the fediverse and how would you want it to be fixed?
(2) What new feature, product, service or piece of infrastructure would make the Fediverse better?

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@tomcoates I think the biggest problems are cultural, e.g., certain people seeing posts as if they're specifically addressed to them when they're not, and then subsequently getting angry at a stranger. The fix is a difficult set of reminders on interactions.

As for things in the fediverse, I'm biased but the things I'm working on (two IFTAS projects & FIRES)

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@tomcoates only FediCheck is available for beta, Content Classification Service is still under development, as is FIRES.

I have some exciting news to announce tomorrow, once I’ve had a chance to process it all and start figuring it out. Some eagle-eyed people may already know what this is.

No, this isn't me accepting a job with Mastodon gGmbH — I know they're hiring again, and in fact suggested that I wouldn't be a good hire for them right now & recommended someone else.

Say you want to use a domain you own as an activitypub/mastodon address. Like I want to be @mcc . But I don't actually want to host my ActivityPub server on dryad.technology. I'm using that domain for something else and can't install CGI on it. Is there something— a .well-known file, a DNS record— I can use to make AP lookup figure out "oh, the mastodon/ap posts/server for domain dryad.technology are actually on apub.dryad.technology"?

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@mcc in Mastodon this is done via an "alternative domain” or "web domain" vs "local domain” https://docs.joinmastodon.org/admin/config/#web_domains

Like, I could maybe get it if it was automatic transcription on-demand, e.g., you have to say something in order for there to be consent, and the transcription happened all on device, but we know that's not likely to be the case.

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@janl like, I've no doubt this could be a helpful aid for neurodivergent’s who have a hard time retaining information in memory in conversations, but we know that’s likely not the intended use.

Kinda feels like Mastodon should support that <...> syntax for URLs to say "hey, don't add a preview for this URL"

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@jsit yeah, it's a thing that discord secretly has: if you don't want a link expanded you can wrap it in <> when composing, like you did, and then the server would mark it as not wanting / needing a preview.

From Joseph Cox @404mediaco : Spy Pet, the Discord aggregator, says, “We prioritize your privacy as a user searcher. Your searches are secure and confidential.”

At the bottom of the site, a button indicates people can “request removal.” After clicking that, a clip from Spiderman 2 (2004), in which J. Jonah Jameson laughs at Peter Parker, automatically plays.

“You’re serious?” Jameson says.

Mastodon already has a few tickets open to show "Followed by ... and n others you follow" when browsing people's profiles, eg: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/19298

I wonder if it would also be useful to show "Blocked by ... and n others you follow". 🤔

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@stefan followers & following are public collections, where as blocks doesn't even exist as a collection (e.g., are the blocking the account, or blocking the domain?)

Idea of the day: what if #linkedin joined the #fediverse? That would be game-changing, probably even bigger than #threads.

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@froginthevalley @evan I feel like LinkedIn joining would be much the same as X joining — LinkedIn now feels less about work and opportunities and more about grifting and fighting with people who are wrong on the internet.

i.e., it's seeing cultural problems become embraced because it keeps users on the site longer which increases advertising revenue.

I'm not sure what value would be gained from having LinkedIn's "social" features like the feed/posts+comments joining.

But maybe fedi jobs?

So much for free speech on X; Musk confirms new users must soon pay to post

The fee, likely $1, is aimed at stopping “relentless” bots, Musk said.

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@arstechnica @lindsey this assumes that the $1 expense to post is greater than the benefit they gain from manipulation (it probably isn't)

@mcollina hey, any thoughts on best practices around fetch (powered by undici) in distributed systems? e.g., patterns for timeouts, error handling, rate limits, circuit breakers, etc.

I haven't seen much documented with just fetch(), it's always axios or some other thing, but it feels like you'd have experience with this at platformatic?

thisismissem,
@thisismissem@hachyderm.io avatar

@janl @mcollina Alrighty, cool. I've been writing some things, but feels like there should be some well defined patterns here.

So, I’m curious: there’s a growing number of hosting platforms specifically for the . For those involved in this, who are comfortable with answering: is there a particular set of tools you use for managing, monitoring, and spinning up instances?

Are those tools open source?

I’m mainly wondering about whether there’s some kind of open platform / dashboard / infra tools that could serve a particular need for hosting / managing / provisioning Fedi servers, and whether the existing hosts in the space would benefit from a shared project of some sort.

thisismissem,
