After a little advice please, as a not very practiced seamstress,
I have a blouse that I want to add a panel into the sleeves to make them a bit more roomy, if I unpick the seam how easy is it likely to be to add an extra piece of fabric.
Can anyone recommend any stitchers who might have online tutorials, I've looked but can't find anything really useful,
Thanks in advance 👍

Judeet88,

@DoubleTreble @sewing It will be relatively easy to add a panel and have two seams on the sleeve. If the piece is triangular, ie the point up near the armhole and widening towards the cuff you won't have to do any work on the size of the armhole on the body of the blouse. If the piece is lozenge shaped, then the cuffs will remain the same size and you also won't have to adjust the armhole.

Martin Wolf (FT) is right to be worried about the corrosive effects on the UK of our deepening mistrust in government.

However, if anyone thinks this is an accidental by-product of rule, they've missed something important.

The right want to discredit Govt. because they want us to think the private sector will save us from corrupt & untrustworthy .

The Tories want to wreck & fostering distrust in Govt. is an important element of their project to transform the UK.

My real worry with Google's voyage into enshittification (thanks to Cory Doctorow @pluralistic the term) is YouTube.

Through YT, for the past 15 years, the world has basically entrusted Google to be the custodian of pretty much our entire global video archive.

There's countless hours of archived footage — news reports, political speeches, historical events, documentaries, indie films, academic lectures, conference presentations, rare recordings, concert footage, obscure music — where the best or only copy is now held by Google through YouTube.

So what happens if maintaining that archival footage becomes unprofitable?

Labour ditches radical reforms as it prepares ‘bombproof’ election manifesto

Colour me surprised. No reforms of things that really matter (environment, social care, business) and are important (HOL and constitution). But what do we expect from a party that is unwilling to think through to a future, and is still desperate to maintain the failed FPTP election system (cos Buggins turn is not too bad). And I won't even talk about Scotland and Wales🤮

@Wen The policies haven't been "ditched". They've been adjusted to take into account reality.

That was fun! I think the @Mastodon table at was the busiest I’ve experienced at an event for a long time - so great to hear from people that use the platform every day! The team enjoyed the chance to meet you - thanks for coming by! More tomorrow…

A Mastodon mascot sits in front of a large touchscreen display showing the “Mapstodon” data visualisation. A Pimoroni Stellar Unicorn LED grid is showing the Mastodon mascot in pixel art in the bottom right of the image.

The lockdown project for one of my parents neighbours was to build a scale model of the lake district from Lego. It’s now in the local museum.

Judeet88,

@RobW Having been to various parts of the Lake District several times I'm guessing that's Lake Windermere and possibly Grasmere just above it. It's not the whole of the Lake District but oh boy I'm definately going to go and see it as The Silk Mill is within walking distance of me.

I've been seeing daffodils in bloom since the beginning of the week. This one was just opening up. It's unusual, where I live, to see daffodils quite this early in the year.
It should gladden my heart to be able to welcome the spring, but they're just making me feel uneasy about climate change...

#Photography #Nature #Closeup #Gardening #Spring #ClimateCrisis #Environment

Judeet88,

@NatureMC That statement is factually correct. Earth's systems are constantly in flux as they try to gain equilibrium. It's always been like that, it's a dynamic system. The planet WILL find a new equilibrium, a new set of marine and land fauna/flora, but it's unlikely to be suitable for most humans in the near and medium term. Only unexpected events like massive volcanic eruptions and the resulting dust clouds will give humans a bit more of a chance to slow down the process of attaining equilibrium, as humans are singularly unwilling to do what's actually necessary themselves. "The wages of sin is death".

Judeet88,

@NatureMC Oh yes I realise all that. Humans are well on the way to self-deletion from the system, see anti-vax, anti-mask, anti-climate change, pro-oil etc. The race is on to see if self-deletion will be quick enough to effectively 'save' the planet from the worst of the changes due to be wrought by climate change.

Judeet88,

@NatureMC The key problem is all the "ifs". And yes I know lots of people are doing lots of things to preserve, protect and nurture our wild world, and that's a good thing. I support some of these groups. And please don't assume our worldviews are diametrically opposed, they're not. I'm a pragmatic realist and sadly humans are mostly on the wrong track at the moment.

During the Pandemic my brother would mail me ridiculous wigs as a joke. BEHOLD AND DREAD!

And if you have a fun hair/wig picture to share, YOU KNOW I WANT TO SEE IT!

Me know a Sia wig half blonde half black with a giant black bow
Me in a swoopy pink and purple anime type wig
This is a full 80's let's get physical wig, it's big blonde curly and comes with a pink headband

    Judeet88,

@RickiTarr Years ago, in the early days of internet dating sites I did a little experiment. I'd put up a pic of me with my normal short auburn dyed curly hair and had yeh, a few hits, not many. I then put up another pic with me wearing a blonde wig, kept the same bio and had HUNDREDS of hits! When I put the pic up of me in my long red wig with a fringe the numbers were off the chart, despite the bio staying exactly the same. Just shows the utter fickleness of men.

You can get an answer to a question on the internet a lot faster if, instead of simply asking the question, you instead post an answer that you know is wrong.

People are more likely to correct your wrong answer than they are to simply respond to a question.

This is known as the Pythagoras Theorem.

I'm thinking about Willpower today! Humans seem to have decent short term willpower, but not particularly good long term willpower, for things they really want. Willpower doesn't seem to be an infinite resource, and is effected by stress, fatigue, and environment.

So what are your thoughts on Willpower? Have you given up something long term that you really loved? What is the hardest thing for you to limit in your life? What is the thing you always seem to cave for?

Just an FYI, this isn't a platform to shame people for bad habits, we all have something we struggle with, we all have different levels of stress, and grew up in different environments. Just for instance, I can smoke a cigar occasionally, enjoy it throughly, but never really crave nicotine, on the other hand, if you were going to tempt me with a loaf of homemade bread, some delicious BBQ, or a well made cocktail, my willpower is much more limited. Human brains and bodies are incredibly complex and no two people are the same.

    Judeet88,

@RickiTarr I think willpower is needed primarily to change habits/lifestyles, then once it's done and become established, the new habits/lifestyle just becomes the new normal and willpower is no longer needed. Using it in small concentrated amounts is doable and can work really well.

I have decided on a change of tactics re doggo next door who barks hysterically and constantly the minute I go outside into MY garden. I've tried ignoring it, this doesn't work...AT ALL. Mr and Mrs Barky Dog just reward it by calling it back indoors. So...I will just stand there staring at it for hours a day letting it get hysterical and barking non-stop until it's owners are so fed-up they actually DO something about it. Oh, and I'm also hoping lots of other neighbours who're also pissed off with the noise write to the Council too. There are several dog owners within earshot and their dogs don't even bark anymore in response, so even they're fed up with it. Mr Barky Dog works from home...so that'll be nice for him...

    Judeet88,

@Rasta Ohhh, anything's worth a try...I'll look one up to put on my phone!

    Judeet88,

@Rasta Critically, does it stop dogs barking hysterically?

    Judeet88,

@seachanger My experience of asking people for help in my village/hamlet has always been extraordinarily good...people LIKE to be helpful and informative, even if they don't know you. My van broke down in deepest rural France once and I had to go and ask for help...I was fed, watered, van was fixed and it was all I could do to politely refuse the offer of a sleepover.

The thing about that people who haven’t been through it often don’t understand is that morale never recovers. The employees who remain will never have the same relationship with that company, bosses or peers.

Watching people you respect pack their stuff and crying on the phone with their spouses is something that never goes away. When I survived a layoff in my 20s I became a “do exactly what the ticket says” person. I stopped suggesting ideas, providing feedback, believing anything a manager told me.

If you are a company considering layoffs, especially a profitable company, you should approach it as “this department will have 100% turnover”. The second I got another job offer I left that company and six months later nobody who had been there at the time of layoffs remained.

I’ve seen that pattern play out multiple times.

    Judeet88,

@matdevdug When I worked as a Nurse in care homes, the key indicator of poor management and low staff morale was turnover rate of staff...this was well-known amongst all my colleagues and it was plain to see whilst I worked at some such establishments. I'm sure this is a phenomenon that exists throughout industry.
