As we all know by now, Stack Overflow has alienated their primary contributors by letting OpenAI train on SO's (CC-protected) content, and forcefully preventing countermeasures. Therefore, SO content will likely become worse and even more outdated as time goes on.
So, time to migrate. What's the preferred open source, community-run alternative to SO for everyone to migrate to? Here's one list of alternative software to run such sites:
If you want to understand how startups and venture capital work, go to 26:24 on the recording of my talk “Excuse Me, Your Unicorn Keeps Shitting In My Back Yard, Can He Please Not?” from 2016:
Today in #enshittification, Trello rug pulls a Workspace I've been using for eight years on their free plan because I share it with my students. I have hundreds of students a year.
Trello can go suck it. Trying to find an tech educator-friendly self-hosted kanban that can be deployed quickly without a ton of back-end headaches. Docker is known to me.
#StackOverflow mods pretending they don't know why people are removing/defacing their answers are the most pathetic lifeform on the Internet right now.
So I finally contacted Google disability support about the degrading accessibility of the youTube app for iOS. I'm fairly sure I was sent there from the youTube help site. I summarized a lot of the issues I and other Voiceover users have been having with the iOS app, particularly the hellish clutter of search results and recommended videos. The response I got today directed me to write to YouTube premium support, but the page they linked to is only for help with one-time purchases or ongoing subscriptions. As an alternative, I was told to post in the community. There was no acknowledgement of the issues and no offer to pass it along. It very clearly said "You've reached the wrong place."
My interpretation of this e-mail is simple: Google disability support can't file feedback about youTube. If there is a way to do so and reach an accessibility-aware person, I have not found it.
The youTube iOS app has now degraded to the point where it's painful to use. I think this is a good nudge to move the podcast feed generator in-house (literally) and start listening to videos in Overcast. It'll also make me less unfocused and dependent on the algorithm. #Accessibility#Google#YouTube#Enshittification
Gods I love the modern #Internet.
Suddenly last week I started getting tons of emails from #Substack for some reason.
Thanks to the #Enshittification of the Internet apparently when a newsletter I once read moved to substack, Substack auto-creates an account for you and start pumping out newsletters. Without consent.
I had to log in, create a profile (thank Artemis only a name was required) and then move into account settings and delete the account.
The company that manages our building EV infrastructure went bust. The new one turned everyone's internet off to install their new hardware today.
Just now the building manager proudly let me know the new system is up and that I can get a charger installed. But I caught the electrician as he was packing up and he was like there's NO way you'll be able to run a cable that long, our system can't handle it.
The new iPads are once again mind-blowingly amazing hardware showcases, hamstrung by software and an extractive App Store gatekeeper that limits what users can effectively do.
There is now such a large overlap of prices between iPad and MacBooks that we’ll probably never see a touchscreen Mac, because it would be a superior choice over iPad in most cases.
What I want, really, is macOS running on desktop, laptop, and tablet form factors, with a relatively open software environment not solely owned by the App Store.
I think Microsoft actually got it right with Windows 11 (minus the #enshittification ads). If only they pushed more strongly on the Surface lineup…
I just heard an advertisement for the Monopoly app that encouraged users to “begin their billionaire journey" and I could literally feel Elizabeth Magie rolling furiously in her grave. I can't imagine a greater betrayal of the intent of her invention. #enshittification
After sacking the charging team at Tesla, the "free speech absolutist" has found a new way to save some a few dollars: Cancelling Summer internships he's already promised to students.
The Helldivers 2 furore is bonkers. If you missed it, Sony, seemingly against wishes of the dev studio, pushed to add a mandatory PSN Network sign-in months after launch on one of their biggest, most popular games on PC, and not only did the community revolt (dropping review score into the teens), but the game is now pulled from 177 storefronts and Steam are issuing refunds (as PSN only works in certain countries). The studio has told players to make their voices heard
@stroughtonsmith I would like to congratulate this weeks MVP for team #enshittification , Sony Interactive Entertainment, for their successful enshittification of one of the most well launched and highly praised gaming IPs released in the last decade. Well earned boys, well earned! 👏👏👏🚽🏅🏆💩. Way to be a beacon for enshittification everywhere Sony, we can smell your efforts from miles away!
Things used to be so much simpler when savegames were just a file, and not some hideously overcomplicated 47 layer cloud thing that doesn't have any options for managing it.
Just try to get Steam to show the conflict resolution dialog so you can tell it to overwrite the cloud saves with your local one.
I got it to show -once-, it still failed, and now I can't get it to show again or do anything but fail with no options presented.
Again this is caused by people trying to be too clever by half.
"Ecologists have reoriented their field as a 'crisis discipline,' a field of study that’s not just about learning things but about saving them. We technologists need to do the same. Rewilding the internet connects and grows what people are doing across regulation, standards-setting and new ways of organizing and building infrastructure, to tell a shared story of where we want to go."
