The Tale of Two Gynecologists

This is a bit long, and I've talked about this a lot lately, but it's something I'm thinking about a lot in the wake of so much hatred of female Healthcare. When my female troubles got bad enough that I finally talked to my doctor about it, he referred me to a gynecologist. I had already had several ultrasounds and an MRI at this point, and she had put me on some oral contraceptives for several months, (which made sick to my stomach no matter what I did) and had just done another ultrasound. She greeted me with "Well, you're really messed up inside, Honey.", which already had me pretty stressed out. Then told me I would probably need surgery to figure out exactly what was going on. She then asked me if I wanted children, and I said No. I had taken my husband with me to the appointment for moral support, and she glanced over at him, and then talked to me for 5 minutes about how many women my age could still have children, and I could definitely consider it, and that they would do everything they could to make sure I could stay viable. They could freeze my eggs if I had to do a hysterectomy, just on and on. She probably asked me directly 4-5 if I was sure I didn't want kids. Finally, I said, "Ma'am, my husband got a vasectomy over a decade ago, we are absolutely sure we don't want kids." After hubs had found me crying on the toliet, because my period was late again, he went to his doctor and said, "Hey doctor, I'm thinking about a vasectomy." The doctor gave him a pamphlet to read, and made him an appointment. The whole thing was done in a few weeks.

Anyhow, she finally referred me to a gynecological surgeon, and I was not looking forward to dealing with this again, and was just generally terrified of having surgery for the first time. I met with this woman and she was so efficient and practical. It is the longest doctor appointment I've ever had, since this surgery would be exploratory, she went over every possibility of what could happen when she was inside. She did a thorough exam, she went over all the scans that I had, and explained why she thought this needed done. Then she said she would like to put in a Mirena IUD during surgery. She said, "You're in pain half the month, and there's no reason for you to have a period if you don't want to have kids. You'll have some erratic bleeding for six months, but by a year most women have a very light or no period at all, there's no reason for you to needlessly suffer if you don't end up needing a hysterectomy."

It's interesting to me still, that one doctor was so focused on what my body could do, and another so focused on how I felt. I came out of the first appointment feeling scared and confused, and the second feeling heard and cared for. Feeling valued as a person and not a baby maker made the surgery much easier to go through, and the Mirena has been great btw. Women don't have to needlessly suffer.

@RickiTarr I'm so glad you found a great doctor!! I wanted to get my tubes tied when I was young because knew I didn't want kids. No doctor would do it. It's infuriating that doctors don't listen to women. I really hoped this attitude would change now that abortion is illegal in so many places.

Example of why the US healthcare system is toxic and harmful:

The last time I got COVID it chewed up 11% of my small vessel lung capacity, giving me permanent asthma. My doctor agreed that I absolutely need to take Paxlovid whenever I get COVID to avoid further lung damage.

So, this week I got COVID.

When my partner went to our pharmacy to pick it up, we were told that our insurance would only cover $300 of the $1600 charge. So basically CVS Caremark (and Pfizer) is extorting me $1300 on a literal life saving medication because they can.

Meanwhile, their CEO alone got compensated $21.3M last year. Corporate greed is literally killing people.

Jennifer,
@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@tdverstynen i read this last week about how to get Paxlovid for free. It's crazy pharmacists don't know about this. Here's a gift article that explains the program. Maybe you can apply retroactively.

#Budget #UKPolitics This article by Gary Stevenson is so good, please read every word of it.

“Whatever Jeremy Hunt says, traders know the rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. And they’re paid millions to bet on it.”

This is what the world is - it is run by a minute elite for a minute elite and the rest of us, the masses, the natural world, we just don’t count. It is a #TragedyOftheNonCommons (will reshare my own piece on this below 1/n)

@pvonhellermannn I spent three hours yesterday at a rural Tennessee courthouse with a lot of other people trying to get my property tax assessment changed. Our property taxes went up 50% last year, and everyone's homes in the entire state went up ~40% probably just to get more $ from us. People in line with me said food, health insurance, healthcare, cars, car insurance, homeowners insurance, etc are now unaffordable, and new state taxes are the latest effort to destroy the middle class.

Politicians before every war:

@Jennifer@bookstodon.com avatar

@RickiTarr I will never ever forget seeing Paul Wolfowitz on TV right before we invaded Iraq talking about how there aren't any important religious sites in Iraq like in Mecca so we didn't have to worry about religious tensions. And I had been reading up a little on Iraq and knew there are a lot of important religious sites there. I clearly remember thinking that if I knew more about iraq than the people planning a war there we were so screwed

Holy shit. Thanks @pluralistic now I don't want to fly anymore 😱

Boeing's 787 "Dreamliner" is manufactured ... in a non-union shop in Charleston, South Carolina. At that shop, there is a cage full of defective parts that have been pulled from production because they are not airworthy.

Hundreds of parts from that Material Review Segregation Area (MRSA) were secretly pulled from that cage and installed on aircraft that are currently flying the world's skies.

I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. My area in Tennessee is full of Trump and anti Biden flags. These people irritate me the most because they rotate flags with swear words. Now, I use this word all the time, but think it's totally inappropriate for a flag on a busy street. I imagine people with young kids passing by. "Grandma what does fuck mean?" I've seen these people, they're older than me. I'm tempted to send them a paper letter telling them to act their age! No American flag in sight 🙄 #Trump #Seriously

What are your thoughts on DNF (Did Not Finish)-ing books? Do you feel guilty about it? Do you worry you missed out on something? Or are you confident in dropping a book and reaching for the next one?

At what point are you most likely to DNF, if ever? What sorts of things cause you to DNF?

My friend, book blogger Kriti, was musing on these questions a while back, and it sparked this new post: https://armedwithabook.com/dealing-with-dnf-the-practice-of-did-not-finish/

Our water utility is almost out of water probably thanks to the ongoing climate change induced drought. A nearby town has no water at all right before another day that will freeze the roads and make travel impossible. That was not something on my radar this week for something I needed to really conserve. I was worried about burst pipes, not no water at all. This is the kind of thing that makes me daydream about moving to another country with communities not run by good ol boys. #Winter #Weather

Thanks to @BatsInLavender I found out today is International Bat Appreciation Day! As someone who likes to explore caves, I've long had a fondness for bats. The ones living here are small and eat insects, helping to keep mosquitoes and crop pests under control. Here's a couple photos from some white nose syndrome research trips to look at gray bats in a federally protected cave in the southeast US. They're so cute!! One photo of me for scale. #Bats #BatAppreciationDay

The aggressive, creepy white Christian evangelical vibe of western Tennessee did not surprise but it disturbed me. The Texas panhandle was as nuts as I anticipated. @fkamiah17 western meddling there has created so many problems. Like the 1953 British/US coup to overthrow the democratic government in Iran because they were about to nationalize their oil industry and expel British Petroleum. I wonder how different things might be for the people in Iran and the middle east in general if we hadn't constantly interfered.
