I need some new science fiction to read, who has some suggestions? I don't like military sci-fi. For reference, my favorite series is the Expanse, I also enjoyed Scalzi's Collapsing Empire, I love Robert Charles Wilson's books. I mostly enjoy space operas and unique stories about technology, for example I really liked the recent book Mountain in the Sea about AI and intelligent octopus. Suggestions from the awesome Bookstodon community? @bookstodon #Bookstodon #Scifi #ScienceFiction

Holy shit. Thanks @pluralistic now I don't want to fly anymore 😱

Boeing's 787 "Dreamliner" is manufactured ... in a non-union shop in Charleston, South Carolina. At that shop, there is a cage full of defective parts that have been pulled from production because they are not airworthy.

Hundreds of parts from that Material Review Segregation Area (MRSA) were secretly pulled from that cage and installed on aircraft that are currently flying the world's skies.

Picked up the Weaver and the Witch Queen by Genevieve Gornichec for vacation next week. I loved her first book The Witch's Heart, it's a retelling of the Norse story of Ragnarok told from the perspective of Angrboda, who is a hermit witch living in the woods. Loki and Thor make appearances. I haven't read any summaries of this book because I know it will be fabulous and I want to be surprised, but I expect it's also based on Norse mythology. @bookstodon

Gross.

"Reddit will let 'an unnamed large AI company' have access to its user-generated content platform in a new licensing deal, according to Bloomberg yesterday. The deal, 'worth about $60 million on an annualized basis,' the outlet writes, could still change as the company’s plans to go public are still in the works."

I finished this book last night and loved it. It's set in an alternative Victorian-era world where magic is real. The world is like ours though in that women can't vote and the lowers classes have pretty crappy lives. This book is about three sisters who decide to try to use witchcraft to get the vote for women, but the story turns into way more than that. Fun magic system. It explores family dynamics, power, and is super feminist. Highly recommend. @bookstodon #Bookstodon #Fantasy #Witches

Question for artists here... my husband is an artist and we thought about setting up an account for him here to share his art with other people. We'd of course have his web address in his profile but wouldn't be obnoxious and ask people to buy stuff. My question is do artists find it helpful and fun to be here? I've heard that some get hassled for having accounts to promote a business and their art. Here's an example of what he does, drawn by hand with a pen. #Art #ArtistsOfMastodon #Artists

Once again, comedian John Oliver provides better context and explanation about what's going with current events than actual news organizations. His latest show is about the Israel-Hamas war and I learned quite a bit. This is long but well worth a watch. #Israel #Gaza #Palestine #Hamas #War #LastWeekTonight

Last night I finished Starling House by Alix Harrow. I had no idea what it was about when I started it, but I loved it. It's hard to describe without spoilers, but it's a complex story of families and poverty and bad luck woven into a great haunted house story. It wasn't scary, just creepy. Alix Harrow is now one of my favorite authors, she's brilliant. @bookstodon #Bookstodon #Fantasy #HauntedHouse #AlixHarrow

I'm watching season 4 of For All Mankind. I think it's a prequel to the Expanse. The people on the lower levels on Mars doing unappreciated maintenance work, crammed into tiny quarters, and not getting paid enough are the future Belters. #SciFi #ForAllMankind #TheExpanse

Our water utility is almost out of water probably thanks to the ongoing climate change induced drought. A nearby town has no water at all right before another day that will freeze the roads and make travel impossible. That was not something on my radar this week for something I needed to really conserve. I was worried about burst pipes, not no water at all. This is the kind of thing that makes me daydream about moving to another country with communities not run by good ol boys. #Winter #Weather

My area in Tennessee is full of Trump and anti Biden flags. These people irritate me the most because they rotate flags with swear words. Now, I use this word all the time, but think it's totally inappropriate for a flag on a busy street. I imagine people with young kids passing by. "Grandma what does fuck mean?" I've seen these people, they're older than me. I'm tempted to send them a paper letter telling them to act their age! No American flag in sight 🙄 #Trump #Seriously

Thanks to @BatsInLavender I found out today is International Bat Appreciation Day! As someone who likes to explore caves, I've long had a fondness for bats. The ones living here are small and eat insects, helping to keep mosquitoes and crop pests under control. Here's a couple photos from some white nose syndrome research trips to look at gray bats in a federally protected cave in the southeast US. They're so cute!! One photo of me for scale. #Bats #BatAppreciationDay

Woman wearing a hardhat, a purple sweater, and muddy boots in a cave passage. There's a crack in the floor and ceiling. Small brown blobs cover the ceiling, they're small gray bats.

I went to see Argylle last night. I don't understand why it got bad reviews, I really enjoyed it. Funny, clever script, surprising twists, and great characters. It's one of the better movies I've seen recently. It can be a bit ridiculous in a fun way at times, maybe that's why the critics didn't like it. #Movies #Argylle

Wow.

The 2023 Hugo Awards: Somehow, It Got Worse
Appalling as it is, the choice to screen English-language nominees for ideological compatibility may, in fact, be a sideshow to the real scandal, which is that hundreds of Chinese voters have been disenfranchised. And—barring even more revelations—this disenfranchisement cannot be blamed on PRC sensibilities and censorship.

I just finished watching episode 9 of Foundation. Holy hell it was so good. The writers and actors really created a pretty epic episode. This was by far my favorite in the whole series so far. I can't wait to see how it ends. I should also say I have mixed feelings staying subscribed to streaming services during the strikes, but since there isn't an organized boycott decided to keep Apple and Britbox. Have gotten mixed signals on this.

Despite its beginning with invading Puritans, I'm glad America has the Thanksgiving holiday that's not tied to religion or gifts, just a day to hang out with friends and family and remember that there are always things to be thankful for. I'm thankful for finding such a great community here. Have a relaxing day, friends in the US!#Thanksgiving

This is my new favorite cook book and the Instant Pot is my new favorite kitchen appliance. I can't believe I haven't tried an instant pot before now. Just cooked dry beans in an hour instead of all the pre-soaking and cooking on the stove for three hours. The mushroom risotto in this cookbook may be the best thing I've ever made. #Cooking #InstantPot #Cookbook #Vegan
