A reminder for folks looking for Canadian news here. Until news organizations get set up in the Fediverse, many of them still offer RSS feeds. I’ve used RSS for years, as it never really went away. For example, if mainstream media is what you want, CBC News, The Globe and Mail, Global News, and The Toronto Star all have feeds you can subscribe to. Even better are the independent choices: Press Progress, Rabble.ca, and The Conversation all have RSS feeds as well.
Hey the #Fediverse!
Today, I have released the version 0.1.0 of my new project, f2ap, an application that adds a compatibility layer for #ActivityPub to your website thanks to your #RSS/#Atom feed!
Currently, only the support for Mastodon is guaranteed, but there are a lot of other platforms out there. If you are on another social platform, please help me document the platforms support! 🙏
BREAKING NEWS: A generation that knows nothing about #RSS and #Atom has finally grown up.
During the podcast recording today, a user in a live chat reached out to me saying that the #feed button on my personal site is broken 'cause it returns an #XML.
When Spotify entered the podcast world, audio producer Alex Sujong Laughlin was wary — and with good reason, since back when she was a social media editor working at The Washington Post, she saw the devastating effect some private tech companies have had on media and journalism. She's sad to be proved right. "Spotify — along with many other companies — wants to create a closed ecosystem for the creation, distribution, and consumption of podcasts, bypassing RSS technology altogether because that would allow them to harvest more listener data to leverage with advertisers," she writes in this story for Defector. Luckily, she says it's not too late to take back our feeds. "You don’t have to understand the technology of RSS to choose to listen to your podcasts on an open app. You can just choose to do it." [Story may be paywalled]
Do y'all wonder how I manage to post so many research articles from universities?
It's because my #RSS feed reader includes over 900 higher education RSS feeds. These include general university feeds, research feeds, library feeds, etc.
I'm all about the sharing so I've put up a plain text list of the feeds at
I have written a #tutorial on how to diversify your daily news consumption through the use of #RSS feeds. A lot of research went into finding extensive lists from which you can pick reputable sources.
The use of email #newsletters and #rss could mostly disappear if there were dedicated #ActivityPub apps to ingest/parse feeds and read or listen to articles. The bonus being that we'd also have comments and virality. Then podcasts and video too. #fediverse#OpenSocialWeb
Okay everyone, here I am once again asking a seemingly meaningless question:
Would you rather prefer a blog's RSS feed if it contained only the summary of all posts, or the full text but only the 10 most recent posts?
(I have learned from personal experience that every RSS reader I can try will choke on a feed file that's several tens of MB in size if I run full text all posts)
For those with #RSS readers - what is a #blog that you read the most? I want to get some #recommendations for great #blogs also please #boost it! Thank you
so, little #selfpromo post as as I haven's sold any of my mugs for 2 month.
I make these #pride#mugs with unique mosaic patterns - every mug I print myself and press myself. All of them are made based off my own physical #art
I also have a website with my gallery (also as #RSS feed!) https://kittenme.ws/art/gallery
(I do sell my artworks, and really need to get some space - so please DM me)
Edit: I'm raising the price by 0,10€ to 40,00€ - there's an etsy coupon code "yes10" that gives you 10€ off the set - that is fully paid by etsy (looks like only for United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Germany)
I couldn't do my self-appointed job without #RSS; I've been using it for over 23 years.
Because it's not as popular as it was I have had to make my own tools to do what I want with RSS. I've made them all available, free and ad-free, at https://rssgizmos.com/ .
Features include tools to make keyword-based feeds from a dozen sources, Bing News feeds based on location, an OPML maker, and even a search tool to find RSS feeds via Wikipedia.
A lot of people are coming to the #fediverse. If you've lost your main information sources, just remember you can use plain old - but effective - rss feeds. We're providing a free to use rss web aggregator.
It's not on visionOS like the rest of my timeline (yet?) but my latest small side-project is so far an iOS RSS reader with some News influences. Aiming for something to casually browse recent posts, without encouraging completionism using unread counts or badges.
Little nervous, but it’s time to TestFlight my RSS news reader for iOS & visionOS. It’s deliberately designed as a feed for stress-free, anti-completionist reading, without unread counts.
It's a little rough around the edges, and I'm not sure if anyone’s interested in this kinda of thing, but if you are, please give it a try! https://testflight.apple.com/join/bCe8UVrf
I should take a break from whining about #ActivityPub to crow about my big breakthrough. Today, I successfully sent my first messages and replies between #Emissary and #Mastodon. And all it required was a complete overhaul the custom ActivityPub outbox.
It’s a small step forward, but a huge milestone for me. Hopefully, it will translate to big wins for other devs who can use my #Golang libraries in the future.
@jjude Hey, thanks for asking. #Emissary is a new server for individuals and small groups that combines #ActivityPub, #RSS, and #IndieWeb. The app is very flexible, so developers can reprogram most of its behavior, while still empowering non-techies to manage their own personal servers.
Most of the core is done, but ActivityPub support has been a big challenge. So, it’s not ready for the real-world yet, but I’m excited about the progress.
YSK Openrss.org now provides kbin.social with RSS feeds, and will provide RSS feeds for any magazine or community indexed by the kbin.social instance (openrss.org)
EDIT: thanks to @Destragras, who pointed out after I posted that kbin does have a raw RSS feed at the bottom of the page for your reader. Example:...
