Under-the-radar late night launch: RSS Parrot is live! It talks like Mastodon, but it doesn't walk like Mastodon. BUT! It will relay any RSS feed straight into your timeline.
Turn Mastodon into your very own feed reader. Follow anything that has an RSS feed and get a toot about new posts.
How? Mention @birb with the address you want to follow.
"Today, millions of people still use RSS readers, but many times more use social-media sites and don’t even know that RSS exists.
When the primary way we read online is filtered through the algorithms of capricious corporations that can change what we see on a whim, both writers and readers suffer.
RSS is a reminder that it doesn’t have to be this way."
Anyone got any #RSS#feeds from trustworthy #news organisations or #jurnalists ? Trying to move away from algorithms and this seems like a good enough option for the most part. Mostly interested in world/European news.
Even though there is no algorithmic #Timeline on #Mastodon, there are ways to find the most interesting/widely shared content from your follows:
I have been using https://news.feedseer.com/ from @decius for a while now for keeping track. You can see the most liked posts in your timeline and the trending #Hashtags, too.
We’ve been floored by everyone’s support for Project Tapestry! Three of the pledge tiers on Kickstarter are already sold out, but there are still several to choose from with rewards ranging from wallpapers to stickers, pins, and even a free year of Wallaroo. At this rate, we’re going to need to come up with some more stretch goals soon! https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/iconfactory/project-tapestry
Your daily reminder that the #fediverse, built on protocols that use industry standards, enables way more than just #mastodon and similar social networks. Projects like Tapestry show that Fedi apps don't have to be social at all to be both useful and commercially viable. Hoping we can see @Iconfactory crush their stretch goals and really land a new kind of app that we need more of: a client for the web that isn’t a browser.
"[...] I’ve always believed the blog is the “natural form” of posting on the web: a site of your own, that you control and set your own rules on content and discussion; where you can post whatever you like without worrying about “The Algorithm”."
The post also mentions a cool OPML feature I wasn't aware of.
If news about stuff around the world is your interest my suggestion is to get an RSS Feed Aggregator like Feedly and connect all the various news sources you enjoy and then read the content like a magazine #news#rss#feed#newspaper#media
Auch wenn #Mastodon keine algorithmische #Timeline hat, gibt es gute Möglichkeiten, die interessantesten/beliebtesten/besten(?) Beiträge darin leicht zu finden:
Did you know we offer RSS feeds for nearly any Use category? That means you can track Uses in any format, topic, tag, or set; Uses by a designer; or Uses in a location. Just check the footer on any category page.
I wrote a quick #blogpost about how great word filters are on my #RSS feed, thanks to #FreshRSS! And they're pretty good here on #Mastodon too, when you want to avoid certain topics and themes, like the absurd amount of Prime Day deals on every tech website ever... :blobfoxangrylaugh:
Quickly create a news feed for your Mastodon account of dozens of major media publications. These instructions will give you a Mastodon “List” that follows all of the publications. You can then unfollow any you do not want. They will not show up in your home feed.
The fediverse instance press.coop imports RSS feeds from popular press sites to the fediverse, and is operated as a public benefit by hello.coop. As these are imported RSS feeds and not for engagement, replies to these posts are rejected.
Note: If you do not want to follow all of these publications you can use this link: https://wallet.hello.coop/mastodon to select and follow only specific publications.
Step By Step Instructions To Follow All Publications In A List Titled PressCoop
Mastodon: Click Choose File and browse to the press[dot]coop_accounts – List.csv file and click UPLOAD and CONFIRM
IMPORTANT! Now if you don’t want these in your home feed, you need to go to Lists and click on PressCoop then click the little slider icon in the top right and select “Hide these posts from home”
Note: This is currently the entire list of accounts supported by press.coop. Some instances block some of these accounts. For instance Fox News is blocked by many instances. If an account is blocked by your instance it will simply not be added to your new PressCoop list.
Disclaimer: No position is taken here on any of these media accounts or whether even having such a news feed list in Mastodon is a good thing. People have requested a quick way to get a news feed list and here is a way to do it. If you do not want a news feed in your Mastodon account do not create one.
You can receive all new posts to this WordPress Blog on Mastodon by following Mastodon account: https://mastodonmigration.wordpress.com/@mastodonmigration.wordpress.com

Good news everyone! The gPodder media RSS reader / podcast client / podcatcher had a bugfix release (3.11.3) last week (subscriptions to youtube user ID URLs now work, yay!).
✍️ Je crois que c’est ça l’éco-conception sur le web : réduire la taille d’une image pour réduire son empreinte carbone tout en ayant demandé à un LLM de l’avoir générée. — Éco-conception, https://larlet.fr/david/2023/09/23/
> But there is something else which probably everyone with a personal website should do: adding an RSS feed.
I’m late to the party, but better late than never.
Shoutout to @simevidas for creating a Github issue, and @stefan for getting in touch via e-mail, i.e. two ways of letting me know they’d like to subscribe.
(Seriously, I must have been living under a rock when it comes to #RSS. After installing the first feed reader I found in Linux Mint’s Software Manager and adding a few feeds, I concluded this is amazingly convenient.)
