How many times did you re-watch this video once you found its location on your HD?

matthewcassinelli,

@marioguzman Is this still there/is there a modern equivalent? I want to make shortcuts to pull these up

@matthewcassinelli I really enjoyed your happy hour talk. The idea that “AI equals App Intents” in particular got me thinking.

@kern Glad to hear it, and also I should’ve been clear that that totally could just be a coincidence and not like a some signal

In dealing with localisation, I’m realising how nice it would be if Apple introduced a crowdsourcing system for users to contribute translations and have it directly integrated into Xcode

@BenRiceM Also while I’m here if you don’t know about using String Catalogs for App Shortcuts here’s the clip: https://developer.apple.com/wwdc23/10102?time=1121

I was just researching this all for my presentation and I was thinking of your app localization stuff

If I have a really useful shortcut for an app I made and want to share, can I just include an iCloud link to the shortcut in the app settings…? Is that a terrible idea?

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@finnvoorhees @simonbs Yes!!! Every app with Shortcuts support should have a Gallery, so many folks stopped but I don’t know why

Forcing myself to use Stage Manager with my new iPad, and I’m really struggling to create a mental model of how to use it. I feel like windows should be added to the current stage by default, but am I just using it wrong?

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@rileytestut There’s not a whole lot of benefit in iPadOS besides being able to cycle between windows, and having any option when connected externally.

I use the Stage Manager action and Shortcuts to set it up for specific workflows but otherwise just use multitasking mostly.

If we got more Shortcuts support it’d really fly

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@rileytestut It’s Apple’s solution for power users and that’s why I use it.

Put on the Siri-tinted glasses, Riley 😎

I’ve always been curious why the big iPad Pro kept the 4:3 aspect ratio while all the others shifted to 10:7

Did Apple ever explain this @viticci @jsnell @gruber?

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@BenRiceM More screen = better

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@BenRiceM Sure, you could make a long one that’s “more” and not have it be comfortable though.

I don’t think they should take the big one and stretch it.

Also in general it’s functionally like having two portrait iPads

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@BenRiceM I have all three models and it fits well for me. The 4:3 would be bad in the smaller ones for holding and using in portrait, and the big one is so big it’d be too skinny in portrait and you basically don’t hold it the same way

Developers – Vocal Shortcuts will almost certainly require App Shortcuts support to show up in the list of actions to pick: https://9to5mac.com/2024/05/15/ios-18-custom-voice-phrases-to-trigger-actions/

After WWDC 2022 Federico Viticci was very loud in his advocacy that Stage Manager should be optimized to run on older iPads many of which had only 4 to 6GB of memory.

In his recent post "Why iPadOS Still Doesn’t Get the Basics Right" he’s complaining that Stage Manager should do more because new iPads are more powerful.

Which is it? Build features that take advantage of more powerful iPads or restrict features to accommodate older hardware?

https://beardystarstuff.net/2024/05/15/after-wwdc-federico.html

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@dennyhenke @habibcham Set the limit based on the device.

Locking out every old iPad from Stage Manager would’ve certainly been worse and cut off every 2018 iPad Pro user. You can’t introduce major OS features and cut off half the population mid-cycle. We’re in a new cycle now.

This isn’t a “gotcha” and gives weird vibes tbh

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@habibcham @dennyhenke the point we’re discussing is also the opposite of forcing people to upgrade, they went out of their way to let older devices work better and now have created a worse situation in the long run for it.

Your friendly reminder that criticizing iPadOS does NOT mean:

  • "dual-boot macOS"
  • "put macOS on iPads"
  • "you want to turn an iPad into a Mac"

It's completely fair to ask for more from iPadOS while keeping it iPadOS.

Anything else is a distraction. Do not let those distractions invalidate your opinion. But expect more and more over the next few days.

I just got a Stream Deck, what am I missing out on? Cool plugins, features I wouldn't have tried out yet.

So far I have set up shortcuts for Xcode to toggle panes, as well as step through debugging and that is super satisfying haha, but feel I am not using it much outside of Xcode at all

matthewcassinelli,
@matthewcassinelli@mastodon.social avatar

@jknlsn I use the AppleScript plugin to trigger my shortcuts by name, then assign them to profiles based on the app.

Keyboard shortcuts are also useful, things like Next Tab in Safari
