Anyone using the SwiftUI SubscriptionStoreView with the “Restore Subscription" button?

i.e.

SubscriptionStoreView(…)
.storeButton(.visible, for: .restorePurchases)

Does the resulting "Restore Subscription" button in the UI, uh… work? For anyone?

I can't get it to do anything. Prompts for password, then does nothing, no IAP SwiftUI callbacks are called, and nothing is delivered to Transaction.updates.

@atpfm When you’re a subscriber to the bootleg feed and it expires, you still get episodes in the feed but the free ones instead. How can I tell which episodes are not the bootleg feeds? @caseyliss @siracusa @marcoarment

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@siracusa @moridin It's actually our CMS.

Every episode in the intervening time HAS a bootleg version, so the easiest answer is probably to just tell your Overcast app to redownload all of the episodes from that intervening time once the subscription is reactivated. Then you'll definitely have the bootleg versions.

@marcoarment hey I’m thinking of getting a MacBook Air as a “bumming around computer” just like you have one.

Which screen size/specs
do you have? I’m trying to find the episode where you talk about it but am struggling to find it?

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@ashah 13", 16 GB, 1 TB.

In retrospect, I could've gotten away with 512 GB. But not 8 GB.

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@ashah Mine's the M2, which is totally fine for what I'm usually doing with it.

The only reason I even use the 16 GB is that I SOMETIMES use Xcode on it.

"The iPad Pro doesn’t need to run macOS, but the answer to why an iPad Pro can’t do something a Mac can do, shouldn’t be to carry two kinds of computers with the same M-series chips, with the same RAM, with the same storage, and do different things on each.”

@marcoarment call me a heretic, I listen to a lot of podcasts in Overcast through the iPhone speakers. Why does overcast duck the audio a fair bit when i touch the screen to wake the iPhone up. I don’t have always on screen

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@rickplayswarr That’s not me doing that — is there some other app that might have an audio-playback session open that might be woken up?

(And it’s far from heresy. I listen that way a lot, and so do MANY people.)

1/5 For the last two years I’ve been working on Plinky, sharing my work publicly while the app has been in beta.

Today it’s finally ready to go live in the App Store, and I’d like to not only share the app with you but share more about why I built it.

Got a little rig for recording short interviews at conferences with stuff I already had lying around

Not sure how well the short shotgun mic will work though. Thinking of picking up one of those wireless lav mics that are all the rage now. Any recommendations? (preferably cheap)

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@charliemchapman Nothing matters more for video-mic quality than how closely you can get it to your mouth.

You’re on the right track with the little lavs. For in-person interviews, get a dual-mic one to avoid weird drift and sync errors between the two people. I have the DJI one and it’s great but not cheap, but there are lots of others now.

Update: It was a crap-in-the-port situation.

(thanks, everyone, for pointing me in that direction)

My iPhone 15 Pro doesn't hold onto USB-C cables very well anymore, and they always fall out or flake out.

(And I only use the USB-C port for Xcode and travel charging, so it's not from overuse.)

Anyone else have this happen? Is this most likely a "crap in the port” 5-minute-fix-at-an-Apple-store situation, or a hardware-repair I'll-be-without-my-phone-for-some-days-and-need-to-move-into-an-old-one situation?

stroughtonsmith, to random
@stroughtonsmith@mastodon.social avatar

Is any app actually using the animated SF Symbols support added last year? I was excited for more of the UI to do that by default, but I haven’t seen it anywhere

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@stroughtonsmith I’m using some of it in the Overcast rewrite. Not a ton. It’s best done with restraint.

@marcoarment Catching up on ATP…when I first head your describe the blurry mess of the AVP, I thought you were being picky or something. But then I went to the store for a demo. I 100% had rheumatologist blurry mess experience. Every slight head movement made every edge and fringe a mess. The store rep said it might be “the motion blur” and said he thought it was being fixed in an update. No proof of that though.

Anyways I wanted to tell you it isn’t just you.

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@joshrivers Thanks for the report! I'm glad that it's not just me, but damn, I wish it was none of us.

film_girl, to random
@film_girl@mastodon.social avatar

Spot on. And I'll add: It’s also a dev kit positioned as a consumer product, priced as an enterprise/industrial tool but without any of the features that enterprise/industry can use. The whole thing remains a mess and no amount of “whataboutism” or iPhone comparisons, as if we aren't living in a different time, will change the fact that this thing is DOA in its current form and positioning.

You can overcome that: Apple Watch did. But this isn’t anything like iPhone.

marcoarment,
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

@jgns Yup. I've got one. Did the car-ATPs with it.

It’s fine, but lots of software dependence.

marcoarment, to random
@marcoarment@mastodon.social avatar

It's absolutely possible. But millions of people had strong reasons to use iPhones even before there were any apps, and then also before the apps were plentiful or compelling.

The customers were already there.

The challenge Apple faces with AVP is getting enough people to buy (and keep using) a device type that they weren't already buying (headsets), which is VERY expensive and limited, to accumulate enough customers for the content and software ecosystem to develop.

So, listening to last week’s @atpfm I was surprised to hear that ending theme song was slightly changed to mention mastodon instead of twitter. It was masterfully done by the artist but I think I figured out the cut points. The updated section starts and ends at “And you can find the show notes at atp.fm, and if you’re into mastodon, you can follow them, at”. Am I right? @caseyliss , @marcoarment, @siracusa ?

@mar_kelp @atpfm An advertiser has literally NEVER asked for chapter art. They don't even ask for chapter links — I just do it as a courtesy.

Most podcast ads are bought through ad agencies who barely seem to know what podcasts are — and even then, they seem to think that the only podcasts that exist are coarse comedy shows by and for idiotic men.

No sponsor has ever mentioned chapters in any way at all. They don't know they exist.
