Forcing myself to use Stage Manager with my new iPad, and I’m really struggling to create a mental model of how to use it. I feel like windows should be added to the current stage by default, but am I just using it wrong?

@rileytestut I always just wanted the original system but for it to work fully on external displays (ie responsive design). Stage Manager to me always felt weird. It wastes so much space. It’s awkward. It’s fiddly – nothing like eg Moom to quickly move windows where I want them. It feels designed to minimise app numbers due to RAM limitations then, but that seems pointless now. And I wonder whether it was initially an attempt to unify iPad and the Mac – a punt to replace Finder.

@rileytestut Stage Manager would be 1000% better if windows were added to the current stage by default

@nileane ok I’m glad I’m not the only one that thinks this, fingers crossed for WWDC 🤞

@rileytestut oof yeah i turned that off even more quickly than i turned it on (on mac, where it absolutely makes zero sense)

@exchgr anecdotally I’ve been hearing better things about it on Mac at least! (I still haven’t enabled it tho, I love my spaces)

@rileytestut lol yeah, my workflow is deeply integrated with spaces. stage manager kind of broke my brain

@rileytestut Shift+click on an app to add it to the current stage. I also did a video on how it all works if you are interested.

I kinda understand it for dedicated workflows, but I use my iPad more ad-hoc. Like I’d really love to always have Ivory pinned to the side and just switch out the “primary” apps next to it (similar to Slide Over), but once I add it to any space it gets stuck there

@rileytestut Same here, it’s not intuitive / usable, so i gave up on it…

@rileytestut same here. For my workflows it just makes no sense to have fixed set of app pairs. I don’t even understand who is this for.

@gklka I honestly think it’d be better if there was just 1 space that was free-for-all windowing, and everything else was classic iPad multitasking. So you could have one “scratch pad,” dedicated to Stage Manager, and still have benefits of Slide Over/Split View everywhere else

@rileytestut I like this idea. I am sure they brainstormed on these a lot, I’d be happy to see the process they went through and hear the rationale behind the decisions

@rileytestut There’s not a whole lot of benefit in iPadOS besides being able to cycle between windows, and having any option when connected externally.

I use the Stage Manager action and Shortcuts to set it up for specific workflows but otherwise just use multitasking mostly.

If we got more Shortcuts support it’d really fly

@matthewcassinelli I feel like that’s your solution to everything 😜

(but you’re not wrong)

@rileytestut It’s Apple’s solution for power users and that’s why I use it.

Put on the Siri-tinted glasses, Riley 😎

@rileytestut I don't understand why we have to give up slide over when using stage manager. I would like some apps to live in slide over whether I'm in stage manager or not
