Let's just skip ahead to where everybody sends their AI clones to the meeting and then we dump the all the meeting notes in the trash https://www.theverge.com/2024/6/3/24168733/zoom-ceo-ai-clones-digital-twins-videoconferencing-decoder-interview

The best part of this interview is where Nilay tries three times to ask which meetings the CEO of Zoom would delegate to his AI clone and no coherent answer ever comes out.

I’m asking you which meetings do you look at and think you would hand off? "I started with the problem first, right? And last but not least, after the meeting is over, let’s say I’m very busy and missed the meeting. I really don’t understand what happened. That’s one thing. Another thing for a very important meeting I missed, given I’m the CEO, they’re probably going to postpone the meeting. The reason why is I probably need to make a decision. Given that I’m not there, they cannot move forward, so they have to reschedule. You look at all those problems. Let’s assume AI is there. AI can understand my entire calendar, understand the context. Say you and I have a meeting — just one click, and within five seconds, AI has already scheduled a meeting. At the same time, every morning I wake up, an AI will tell me, “Eric, you have five meetings scheduled today. You do not need to join four of the five. You only need to join one. You can send a digital version of yourself.” For the one meeting I join, after the meeting is over, I can get all the summary and send it to the people who couldn’t make it. I can make a better decision. Again, I can leverage the AI as my assistant and give me all kinds of input, just more than myself. That’s the vision."
I’m assuming when you looked at your calendar today and saw a Decoder session. You were going to come to that on your own. What would you have sent an AI avatar to instead?\ "I think an AI avatar is essentially just an AI version of myself, right?"

Now here's some predatory behavior. Wonder how many folks accidentally subscribe to streaming services during routine software updates now.

(Keep in mind I already have a subscription to Paramount+ outside of Amazon's billing system and have already logged in through the app.)

Three ways to make Google more tolerable:

  • @ernie's UDM14 trick
  • An ad blocker
  • Sign out and compartmentalize your Google account

Step-by-step instructions here: https://advisorator.com/members/three-steps-to-fix-google-search/

@Aaron @ernie I find it easy in some ways and tricky in others, especially if you value cross-platform instead of just locking yourself in with Apple instead.

Newmy,
@Newmy@writing.exchange avatar

@Aaron @ernie For sure, it's just hard to get 1:1 replacements and there are trade-offs in many cases. I'm paying Kagi and Proton for services I used to get free or cheap from Google (and still have one foot in my Gmail account). Have not found a great alternative to Google Photos. And I'm not giving up my foldable phone.

As long as we're disenshittifying Google, a reminder that ad blockers work wonders. Pictured: uBlock Origin disabled vs. enabled.

My father-in-law had a never-opened, 48-year-old GE radio in his garage. No pairing, no logins, no setup. It just works.

This is gonna take a while…

Slowly working on getting my music into Plex to ultimately create my own hybrid Apple Music / self-hosted music library. I’ll likely never stop using Apple Music simply for the power of discovering new stuff.

Newmy,
@Newmy@writing.exchange avatar

@Aaron FWIW, although Tidal sucks as a standalone app, it is pretty great as an integration with Plexamp. Your library still takes precedence in the UI but you'll see Tidal content when searching for stuff not in your library, or on artist pages where they have additional albums you don't.

Newmy,
@Newmy@writing.exchange avatar

@Aaron Wonder if you can do iTunes > Last.fm, then connect Last.fm to Plex.

Yeah, I kind of lucked into a free Tidal subscription for a few years (cheap promo subscription via Best Buy, which never actually ended after I cancelled) but they finally caught wise a few months ago. Hardly ever used Tidal's app but it was a great supplement for my Plex library.

Newmy,
@Newmy@writing.exchange avatar

@Aaron Oh nice. So, can you get it to associate your playlists etc with the songs in your actual library?

Tip: If you want a suck-free Google experience, set this parameter as your default search engine.

@ernie @jhpot Brilliant! Meanwhile I'm still waiting for the web toggle to roll out to me. (Using this shortcut fails in the meantime.)

Newmy,
@Newmy@writing.exchange avatar

@ernie @jhpot Indeed it does! Maybe I should mess around with Firefox containers so I can search while signed out.

Oh man did this random comment resonate with me. There is so much low-hanging fruit to make OSes more useful and productive, but it's all thankless work that will neither move stock prices nor get PMs promoted, so we get AI gimmickry instead.

Like, the only-way to get system-wide text undo on Android is by switching to a Japanese keyboard - https://9to5google.com/2023/12/22/gboard-undo-key/

Unclear if that's getting fixed. But at least your keyboard will be able to spew out boilerplate text in your group chats!

You know what's cool about Mastodon? When someone posts a link, it's just ... the link. Like the real actual URL and not some inscrutable shortened junk that mainly exists to track you and/or throttle competing social networks

For those who are tut-tutting iOS emulation as piracy, here's a homebrew Tetris-like ROM you can download for free https://mhughson.itch.io/from-below

So this seems like it'll be the first real test of whether Apple will allow emulator apps with BYO ROM files. No copyrighted imagery, not blatantly ripping off another dev, picking up press coverage. If this stands I suspect the floodgates will open - https://9to5mac.com/2024/04/16/bimmy-nes-emulator-is-the-latest-game-emulation-app-for-iphone-ipad-and-mac/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=mastodon

Or not. "I’m so sorry everyone. I removed the app out of fear. No one reached out to me pressuring me to remove it. But I’d rather not have the risk"

Microsoft PowerToys is about to get larded up with some AI BS, isn't it?

Newmy,
@Newmy@writing.exchange avatar

PowerToys is the only indisputably great thing Microsoft has added to Windows in recent memory, so of course I look forward to it being imminently ruined somehow
