You can now remove posts that you view in your lists from your Home feed! For any list that you do not want member posts in your home feed just go to that list's settings (slider bar icon at top right) and toggle "Hide these posts from home".
This is a great way to curate your home feed and find accounts you may have intended to put in a list, but didn't add to the list when you followed the account.
Do you need help with using Mastodon and the Fediverse? Especially if you're a beginner or unsure about techy things?
You can ask by messaging me or replying to this thread, and I'll try to help or find someone else who can help. Don't worry if a question seems silly or basic!
You can also look things up on the guide at https://fedi.tips, which has an "essentials" section at the top and a complete list of answered questions below that.
If you are using Mastodon on a computer or tablet through your server's website, there's an optional Tweetdeck-style advanced web interface which lets you add lots of columns.
Here's how to activate it:
Log in through your server's website
Go to Preferences
Tick the box marked "Enable Advanced Web Interface"
Combine these codes with the operator language: to filter your search results.
For example, if you only want Mastodon search results in French you would include language:fr in your search alongside the keywords or hashtags that you're looking for.
Are you getting notifications about a thread you don't want to take part in any more? You can mute a conversation thread so that you don't get notifications about it any more:
Go to a post in the thread where you are tagged
Click ⋯ and select "Mute conversation"
If you change your mind, click ⋯ within the thread and select "Unmute conversation".
If your app doesn't show this option try logging in through your server's website.
Are you new here? Giving this place another try? Welcome!
I've been here for a few months and the best advice I've gotten so far is: Follow a lot of people. Like a lot. Like way more than you would have on the other site.
Make use of #Lists, and when you follow someone make a habit of adding them to a list right then.
It's quick and easy:
Set up at least three or four lists. You can number them to arrange the list display order.
After you hit FOLLOW, click the three vertical dots and choose "Add or Remove from lists". This will bring up your lists and you can click to add the follow to one or more lists.
They will make your #Fediverse life so much better.
Miss those thread unrollers from other sites? There’s a Mastodon one!
You can mention @mastoreaderio anywhere in the thread with the word “u n roll" (without those extra spaces of course) and it will reply with a link to the unrolled thread.
Do you want your posts to be as easy to discover as possible? You might want to opt into the "full text search" system.
By default, posts on here are only searched by hashtag. However, if you opt into full text search, all the words in your entire posts will become searchable by other people.
Do you prefer typing emoji instead of stopping to choose them from a picker?
You can do this when writing a post on Mastodon's web interface by typing a : (colon) and then a keyword without a space. This will automatically bring up emoji with that keyword in their description.
For example if you type :sun it will show you emoji with the keyword "sun".
(Note that if there are many matches for a keyword, you may need to go to the picker to see them all.)
While federation is great, it does create some confusion. For instance, when you want to refer to someone else's post, you may have tried to copy/paste the link and it doesn't seem to work right.
Unfortunately, you might need to understand a little about the way the fediverse works. Check out this new blog post:
Mastodon is straight popping off the past few weeks! Loads of new sign-ups. Don't forget to do your introductions and tag them so they're easier to find!
The most important ones:
Make an #introduction post littered with hashtags that are relevant to your interests. People with those interests are likely to follow or boost your introduction for more visibility.
Follow Follow Follow! Follow people that seem interesting to you. It's the basis of "federation" across the fediverse and helps your toot travel to other instances.
Followgraph will provide you with all the follows of the people you follow.
What? OK, so say you have found a few accounts that interest you. Run Followgraph and you will see and be able to follow all of their follows ranked in order of how many are shared.
