Any VT-NMR experts here? I’m having trouble with losing my lock signal in DMSO above 35 ºC. Using a regular NMR tube w/ septum on top. No spinning.

We're using a Bruker Fourier 300, quite a basic NMR, which is often fiddly to lock anyway (lock is slow, flock is fast but erratic - TopSpin 3.x)

Any tips? Narrower tubes? Leave it unlocked? (Expt only takes about 3 mins - gradshim at each temp) Thx!

Someone needs to make an enzyme that breaks down whatever chemical is in onions that makes dogs sick so I can put it on my food before I give it to my dog.

American physical chemist Gilbert N. Lewis died #OTD in 1946.

Lewis made several significant contributions to chemistry, including the development of the concept of electron pairs, which led to the theory of the covalent bond. He also introduced the concept of Lewis acids and bases, which helped explain many chemical reactions. Additionally, Lewis proposed the theory of the coordination bond, which is essential in understanding the behavior of transition metal complexes.

Totally random request but I feel like this is probably the right place for this.
-I'm looking for a killer DIY home made cleaner that makes chemical sense. I've been using a great mix of isopropyl/dish soap /washing soda/water that works great in my bathroom. But I need something that doesn't leave a white residue for the kitchen. Same recipe minus washing soda? I'm going to use it for counter tops etc

A detailed image showcasing a scene all about chemistry conceptually derived from a previous time, typically signifying yesterday. Place hints of antique chemistry apparatus, glass flasks filled with bubbly liquid displaying chemical reactions. A parchment paper on a wooden table could act as a historical backdrop, suggesting the passing of time. Include subtle undertones of sepia hues for an old-time feel. The scene should further embody a sense of knowledge and discovery. An important element is a blank section of this scene, perhaps an empty chalkboard or a blank page of the parchment.

This paper is kinda wild:
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acscentsci.3c01593

"We have discovered that hard, electrical conductors (e.g., metals or graphite) can be adhered to soft, aqueous materials (e.g., hydrogels, fruit, or animal tissue) without the use of an adhesive. The adhesion is induced by a low DC electric field."

I can see this being quite useful for possibly attaching imaging equipment or electrodes for neural recordings.

French physicist and chemist Frédéric Joliot-Curie was born #OTD in 1900.

He was a French physicist and husband of Irène Joliot-Curie, with whom he was jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radioactivity in 1934.

He served as the first High Commissioner for Atomic Energy in France after World War II and played a significant role in the development of France's nuclear program.

The Elements We Live By
How Iron Helps Us Breathe, Potassium Lets Us See, and Other Surprising Superpowers of the Periodic Table by Anja Røyne

We all know that we depend on elements for survival - from oxygen in the air we breathe to carbon in the molecular structures of all living things. But we seldom appreciate how, say, phosphorus holds our DNA together or how potassium powers our optic nerves enabling us to see.

#ScienceDirect and #Elsevier clearly didn't review this #chemistry paper about #batteries. The intro starts with "Certainly, here is a possible introduction for your topic:".

This lack of oversight erodes #trust in #science. The paper needs to be retracted and the authors sanctioned immediately.
