Abnormally warm patches of water in the Pacific Ocean have had a disastrous effect on marine life since 2010. Now we may know what’s causing these giant “blobs” to keep appearing. Science Alert has more, including how a policy designed to improve environmental conditions may have negative consequences.

Could magma be moving deep below the surface on the border of Germany and the Czech Republic? And if so, what is the significance? Recently installed seismometers in the Vogtland region captured a swarm of earthquakes, suggesting a “complex seismic situation” could be developing. Live Science explains.

I’m getting SO MANY questions on whether we will see the aurora tonight. The honest answer: I don’t know!! Last night’s activity was really low, but there are several CMEs that will likely hit Earth tonight, so there’s a better chance.

That being said, the level of activity that brought about the aurora as far south as FL/TX/Mexico is higher (G5) than what’s predicted (G4). (1/2)

skrishna,
@skrishna@wandering.shop avatar

If you’re north of about Washington DC on the east coast, I would say you have a good chance of seeing them tonight away from light pollution. This is the current forecast, which is more conservative than my prediction.

English chemist Dorothy Hodgkin was born in 1910.

Among her most influential discoveries are the confirmation of the structure of penicillin as previously surmised by Edward Abraham and Ernst Boris Chain; and mapping the structure of vitamin B12, for which in 1964 she became the third woman to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Hodgkin also elucidated the structure of insulin in 1969 after 35 years of work.

Scientists find 57,000 cells and 150m neural connections in tiny sample of human brain.

Harvard researchers teamed up with Google to analyse the makeup of the brain, much of which is not yet understood.

Aurora colors come from atoms that are trying to shed some of their energy.

In very thin air, oxygen survives in a delicate, high-energy state that emits green light. In denser air, atomic collisions knock oxygen to a lower-energy state that emits red. Nitrogen is a robust emitter that glows bright in even lower, denser layers of the atmosphere.

Beautiful science.

So many beautiful aurora photos going around right now. Wonder where those amazing colors come from? Here's a helpful breakdown.

When you split up the light of a typical aurora, it looks like this.

Many colors from just nitrogen & oxygen!

@coreyspowell@mastodon.social avatar

Colors of an aurora depend not only on which element is emitting light, but also on where it is.

Oxygen at high altitudes glows red; at lower altitudes it glows green. Purple nitrogen is lower still.

Atoms are complicated creatures!

Study shows heightened sensitivity to PTSD in autism

Parvalbumin interneuron activity in autism underlies susceptibility to PTSD-like memory formation
Abed et al., 2024, iScience

"ASD and PTSD share common features, including impaired emotional regulation, altered explicit memory, and difficulties with fear conditioning.

“We demonstrated in four mouse models of ASD that a single mild stress can form a traumatic memory.” "

Fellow Mastodonians ...

Do any of you do video editing ... perhaps for a podcast or maybe personal home videos? If so, what is the best, most easily used video editing software out there?

I don't need all the bells & whistles, but will need features like splicing video segments (from diff't sources) together, some nice (not over the top) transitions, ease of use, & good quality end results.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

An interesting article on the time line of the universe.

The Universe passed through many epochs, from free quarks and gluons to stable protons and neutrons to neutral atoms to stars, galaxies, planets, and more. The precise time at which these various epochs occurred, including the (current) dark energy-dominated era, can be pinpointed with precision. Here’s how we know.
