Got two Turing tables and some microcode.

I work on back-end server-y type stuff at a place that keeps rockin' the free web. I like rust, python, and horrible puns (not necessarily in that order).

I tend to be nice for selfish reasons (I don't like hanging out with jerks).

Is this one of those "good guys with a gun?" An armed off-duty security guard thought three teens were going to rob a store. They weren't; they were returning a BB gun. Now one of the teens is dead because the wannabe hero shot one of the kids and "stood over the teen on the ground and continued to fire." Big man hero is in jail on charges of for second-degree murder. If he hadn't been armed, he would've dialed 911, he'd be free, and the kid would be alive.

Just a little reminder that here in Europe, we play the same exact video games as youth from the United States

We do not have (daily) school shootings however

Instead of blaming video games, start looking at the super easy to get weapons on each corner of street problem

Games are not the problem, weapons are 🇺🇸

@stux

Only correction, but an important one.

US school shooters don't get their guns "on the street."

Guns are extremely expensive. US school shooters are usually rich, white, men and boys (~85%) and use guns legally owned by their families.

I don't think people realize how expensive guns are, and how much US gun ownership is concentrated in rich, white, men.

As you look at this picture, realize that each AR 15 costs about $1000.00.

Trump is testing the mainstream press. He’s saying in every way possible: Yes, I really am going to be a dictator. Yes, I really am going to dismantle the democratic institutions that have defined this country for 250 years. Yes, this really will be the last election, if I win it. And by the way, of course that means the end of a free press.

Now, how are you going to cover this political season? https://mastodon.social/@indivisibleteam/112576597337880208

English mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing died #OTD in 1954.

During World War II, he played a crucial role in deciphering the Enigma code used by the German military, significantly contributing to the Allied war effort. In his paper "Computing Machinery and Intelligence," he proposed the famous Turing Test as a criterion for determining whether a machine can exhibit intelligent behavior indistinguishable from that of a human.

The major flaw I see in left-wing (think coops) anarchism is the simple fact that wielding power is still work. There is an implicit assumption that the freedom to be your own boss, set your own rules, shape the future of the organizations you participate in is its own reward.

It can be. But, it's also work, toil, labor, that which must be compensated or fall to corruption.

Too many anarchist ideas of how, for example, a small town might work require a population filled with busy bodies.

On this day ten years ago, we lost our innocence as the former single page HTTP/1.1 specification (RFC2616) "exploded" into six separate new documents (RFC7230 and family). We could then no longer pretend HTTP was a simple protocol.

In June 2022, it was again updated:. "RFC 9110 and family". The spec is now split up into five main documents: semantics, caching and separate specs for each version: 1.1, 2, 3.

Those five documents hold 143,000 words combined. HTTP is not easy.

Always remember that businesses are not a family, and you will get sacrified to keep the line going up ('growth!'), even if that growth is based on a foundation of total quicksand.

The next trillion dollar market is good products, made well, and well supported with good customer service.

For those not following the new Windows "feature" - a new function in Windows 11 will begin recording keystrokes, screenshots, and browser sessions. This is difficult to turn off and fragile, and even with Group Policy disable settings, easily overridden on subsequent updates.

For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

GossiTheDog, (edited )
@GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social avatar

Turns out speaking out works.

Microsoft are making significant changes to Recall, including making it specifically opt in, requiring Windows Hello face scanning to activate and use it, and actually encrypting the database.

There are obviously going to be devils in the details - potentially big ones.

Microsoft needs to commit to not trying to sneak users to enable it in the future, and it needs turning off by default in Group Policy and Intune for enterprise orgs.
