Bike parking: build these. Just these. That’s it. These stands can accommodate any type of bike. And you can lock the frame to them.

Don’t build ones where only the wheel goes in. Don’t build anything where the mechanism can go wrong.

Sooo apparently Dutch primary schools are using algorithms to decide which children are at risk of failing and need extra learning material, and ChatGPT to detect fraud. Yes, in primary school.

A few years ago we had a major scandal about people's lives being ruined after algorithms had incorrectly marked them for social benefits fraud. Guess we didn't learn this shit is just shit.

Hier doch noch ein paar Worte von mir zu dem Offenen Brief einiger Lehrender der Freien Universität zum Protestcamp anti-Israelischer „Studierender“ und der von der Hochschulleitung angeordneten Auflösung durch die Polizei. Wer es nicht mitbekommen hat: gut 700 Lehrende verschiedener Universitäten, darunter knapp 250 Kolleg*innen der FU, haben die Auflösung des Protestcamps kritisiert. Sie halten den Campus der FU für einen öffentlichen Ort, an dem solche Demonstrationen legitim seien, 1/

Und damit komme ich zum dritten Punkt: Der Offene Brief verkennt das völlig, wenn er sagt, dass der Protest nicht auf Dialog ausgerichtet sein müsse. Doch, wenn er an einer Universität stattfinden soll, dann muss er das. Ist er es nicht, hätte er auch dann nichts dort zu suchen, wenn er tatsächlich von Studierenden getragen würde. Damit Universitäten funktionieren können, muss dort mehr Meinungsvielfalt ausgehalten werden als anderswo. 8/

In Europe, flying is cheaper than taking the train.

It's an embarrassment, and a major problem: we have to stop flying for silly short distances. Realise that the overheads of flying (reaching the airport, awaiting 2 hours, the flight, the unloading, reaching the destination) largely cancel out any time gains of flying. And the carbon costs are utterly untenable. Not to speak of the modern, dire conditions of the whole flying "experience".

Another embarrassment is that train connections can't be guaranteed when across countries or companies. They aren't even coordinated. As if those who commission and set the schedules didn't travel by train themselves, at least not internationally. In considering how tiny most European countries are, it's frankly bizarre.

There are so many destinations one could travel by train to, yet in practice, it's not sensible. A disgrace.

The upside is that it can be fixed.
