It just clicked in my brain. What I haven't been able to articulate about why I'm so anxious about Recall. I'm sure others have already gotten to where I am.

It's worse than "a system that tracks everything you do" and stores that info in a basic database that could be easily compromised.
It's worse than a nanny surveillance tool for companies to spy on their employees.

It's inescapable.

It doesn't matter if I make a dozen "how to disable recall" tutorials. The second YOUR data shows up on someone ELSE'S screen, it's in THEIR recall database.

It won't matter if you're a master expert specialist. You can't account for EVERY other computer you've ever interacted with. If a family member looks up an old email with your personal data in it, your data is now at risk.

If THEIR system is compromised YOUR data is at risk.

I just went from "vague feeling of unease" to "actively writing templates to canvas elected officials, regulators, and attorneys general."

chainq,
@chainq@mastodon.social avatar

@SomeGadgetGuy Yeah, I had basically the same thought the other day (note: I'm in Germany, EU).

It's complete insanity. I'm 100% sure it violates more than one EU directives and laws about privacy, and data protection, plus making it actively worse if I'm communicating with outside the EU. I haven't acted on it yet, at my company, but I definitely will (we have Data Protection Officers). I will also notify all my peers I work with as a freelancer. For a starter.

i'm always baffled when new things launch and they don't have a fediverse link but instead still on birdsite and maybe instagram, it feels somehow antiquated

chainq,
@chainq@mastodon.social avatar

@mntmn I think the reason for this is that the Fediverse isn't a good marketing tool for traditional companies, unlike Instagram, or X, or Facebook even. There is no algorithm feed to hijack and get you go viral. There is no one to pay money to, to shove your stuff down people's throats.

It needs a lot of consistent work and good values, to stand here on good terms with a community that is mostly consist of very conscious consumers. It's hard.

So, I use a MacBook and macOS.

Lets say, I have a Teams call with someone who uses Windows, and has Windows Recall enabled. Am I going to be recorded by it on the other end? Am I going to be warned about this feature being on? Can I opt out? How does it affect my privacy? Is this in any way legal in the EU? What happens with calls between US and EU? Which legislation applies?

Microsoft suddenly going to town again with ARM/qualcomm surely will be good for us in terms of more arm64 software compat and Linux mainlining efforts for Qualcomm hw.

also, people who are tired of all these AI anti-features can be sure that the MNT Reform family will be free of that stuff.

chainq,
@chainq@mastodon.social avatar

@mntmn I wonder if any of these high-end non-Apple ARM chips will be available for "mortals" to buy and design hardware around, or this will just remain yet another walled garden.

Is there a way to resolve #git cherrypick conflicts purely on the command line, without using a merge tool by saying „use theirs“? Or „keep upper“?

chainq,
@chainq@mastodon.social avatar

@root42 You have to edit the conflicted file with any editor, then git add and commit the desired outcome. That is, if you're cherry-picking a single commit. If you're doing multiple commits, you can do git cherry-pick --continue, I think.

chainq,

@geerlingguy Great video. Thanks for making it. I think this is now painful, but will be good in the end, as it creates clarity...

"Corporate Controlled Open Source" is certainly a thing, such projects are usually happy to throw out/reject everything that is "in their way", or perceived as a maintenance burden. Including support for niche OS/CPU architectures, and even use cases, and heavily gatekeeping contributions, while they talk being "free and open".

They finally show their true colors.

So I had this PiStorm that I bought last year at 68k Inside in Finland 🇫🇮, if my memory serves, but I never built it up, because I did not feel like permanently putting a PiStorm in any of my OCS machines.

But watching @root42 videos is a bad, bad influence, when it comes to a spending spree, so now I bought a Lazarustorm. Still waiting for the Pi 3 A+ and a few other bits...

About a month ago, I entered into a small "language contest" that was set to prove that no "newschool" language (Rust, Zig, Nim, etc) is ready to replace C in the embedded field.

The deadline was about 10 days ago, and according to the original technical evaluation criteria, my Free Pascal solution won, but got disqualified, because "we already know, Pascal could not replace C".

Programming languages rise and fall, human stupidity remains. I rest my case.

I also figured out that what I thought was the internal graphics circuit giving up in that little living room PC I have (cf the review video I made a while back) was actually just a wonky HDMI cable. Had little dots and artifacts and occasional blackouts for weeks. Replaced the cable in a sudden moment of clarity today. Flawless now. Should have thought of that earlier, maybe. 😹

chainq,
@chainq@mastodon.social avatar

@janbeta That reminds me the problem poor @iszell had, who bought a bunch of HDMI scalers on evilBay and other places, and none of them had working audio. He tried everything, to no avail. So last summer I took my very similar set of devices to Hungary, to figure out what was wrong.

Turns out, it was the kind of HDMI cable he used, so even if he swapped cables, still no audio. The same cable otherwise provided perfect full HD picture.

Never trust a HDMI cable. They're all made of evil.

it irritates me that firefox ships sponsored ads by default even on debian. how could this be turned off? i really don't want our devices to show an OTTO sponsored icon by default.

update: this can be turned off by setting "browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.feeds.topsites" to false

chainq,
@chainq@mastodon.social avatar

@mntmn In about:preferences#home, under "Shortcuts", switch off "Sponsored shortcuts"? Just a guess... No idea how to make this default in Debian. 😅 Probably you can add it to some default setting to the default user...

I picked up a couple more Videoton TVC goodies at @revisionparty. Thanks to @iszell who brought these for me all the way from Hungary 🇭🇺 .

An Amiga PowerShark-style USB-C Power Supply, to replace the bulky original brick that runs infamously hot, and a dual Floppy Disk Drive with matching controller card!

Probably I'm somewhat biased, but it's pretty cool that things like these even exist for such a niche computer.

I did a dumb, and spent half a year of pocket money in advance - I managed to snitch one RetroTink 4K from the March 9th batch that sold out in about an hour... Then somehow FedEx did a miracle, and it's here two days before I have to set off for @revisionparty

Hoping to use it for Oldschool stuff in cooperation with Mr. @gasman for even higher video quality on the big screen.

chainq,

@fenarinarsa @gunstick @revisionparty @gasman I don't even have a 4K or a HDR screen... 😅

From my point it was really a bit of an investment for the future. I have an RT5X as well, and I wanted a 2nd one for a long time (we sometimes have multiple recording or "oldschool" stations at parties), but I bought this one instead, because of its extra capabilities.

Although I have other RGB and HDMI scalers too (like the Extron DSC 301 HD, that I'm still very fond of), it's good to have options.
