So, this is what #Apple has become? The company once praised for its incredible UX, care for small details, slick design, and devices everyone craves now looks like your average LinkedIn feed.

Of all the bad and overhyped startup ideas of the last decade (VR, crypto, NFT, #AI), they've chosen the worst-looking and most unethical one to go all-in, AND they've chosen one of the worst partners to do this journey with. What a shame.

told me recently that they’re going to scrape my data and train their LLMs with it unless I ‘submit an appeal’. No, it’s not a simple opt-out, but a form where I had to write a text explaining myself.

I asked Llama (Meta’s LLM) to write the ‘apology note’ for me. Not one minute later, Meta told me they’ve ‘recognized my appeal’ and will not scrape my Instagram data. I’m almost 100% certain they use LLMs to process those.

TIL that there is a (very old) HTML element to group headings with related content (subtitle, tagline, ‘last updated’): <hgroup>

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Element/hgroup

It allows for even less classes and <div>s; how have I missed it all these years?

It baffles me how cookie banners label the decline button ‘No, thanks’. Who in their right mind would be that chill?

— Hey, we want to track you and sell your data
— No, thanks!

It should clearly be labelled ‘wtf no’

Alright, what’s the deal with every YouTuber doing ad reads for data deletion services? Seemingly everyone got a deal with either #DeleteMe or Aura. I find the idea of such services good, but I’ve never used one nor even investigated them. The amount of creators they sponsor makes them seem very suspicious; it’s like VPN and Raycon and Raid Shadow Legends all over again 🤨 Does anyone know what’s up with that?

kytta,
@kytta@fosstodon.org avatar

@gadgetoid easy! To remove your personal info from services, you have to submit your personal info to a service!

Wait…

I’ve finally started to consider an off-site backup location. I don’t have enough data to justify building a server to put in my parents' house (yet), so cloud it is.

So far, I’m leaning towards B2. Do you have anything good (or bad) to say about it, or can recommend other services to check out?

I want: one (EU-based) location, no (or small) egress fees, pricing per GB (or less), no minimum charge. I use , so backend doesn’t matter (S3, FTP, DAV, you name it).

kytta,
@kytta@fosstodon.org avatar

@rysiek they have a free allowance of 3x the stored data, and $10/TB after that. I find that pricing quite fair; definitely better than some other cloud providers

kytta,
@kytta@fosstodon.org avatar

@josephb wow, didn't know that they support restic! I love the service, but with the EU VAT, it's more expensive than Backblaze or Hetzner. And my data amount will most likely land in the middle of their 250 GB / 1 TB split 😁

What are some dirt cheap, barebones Linux (or BSD) based server options? Mostly for web hosting etc.

I've used lowendstock and serverhunter, but those sites are not very dependable.

Any suggestions would be great!

#servers #linux #bsd

kytta,
@kytta@fosstodon.org avatar

@tdarb on Hetzner, an IPv6-only ARM64 machine has 2 cores, 4 GB RAM and 40 GB of space for €3.92/mo. Throw a free Cloudflare (don't boo me) in front of it, and you've got IPv4, if needed. However, they don't have OpenBSD images, and you can't use your own without paying extra afaik

Doing some research on design systems / design tokens, especially around color.

What are some good open source color palettes?
So far I have: Open color, Open props, Tailwind, Material, Adobe Spectrum, GitHub Primer, Ant Design, IBM Design Language, Radix UI, Bootstrap.

Req: Need to have a page that lists all their colors (see examples).

Looking at color palettes primarily for UIs, not those designed exclusively for dataviz.

The Material color palette
Open Props

kytta,
@kytta@fosstodon.org avatar

@leaverou https://huetone.ardov.me/ has most of them + it allows you to compare the values across all three OKLCH dimensions. The only thing missing is the actual OKLCH under the hood (palettes can only be saved and loaded as RGB)

PSA: If you use a piece of software, encounter a bug, and find out it was already reported, DO NOT comment with "I have the same issue" if you have nothing else to contribute. At the very least, add data that might be useful. ESPECIALLY DO NOT leave any comments if the maintainers already said "we are working on a fix".

My mailbox is dying under the load of all the people who have the same bug as me and also have the urge to comment about them having this bug 🙄

Over almost 15 years of watching YouTube, my sub feed has slowly evolved into mostly British-made videos. That, plus the fact that I didn't actually speak English for 6 years until late 2023, somehow made me speak in a very bad approximation of RP 😂 Like, even as I'm typing this post, my inner voice sounds British. And now that I actually do have to talk in English again, it feels very weird, because I can't really associate myself with the accent I now speak in 🥴

Here's an unpopular opinion: Google is outstandingly terrible as the maintainer of Android. Android needs to become a separate entity, preferably a nonprofit, and preferably run by someone who has strong opinions.

Last week, I was given the ‘opportunity’ to write some IE11-compatible 5. No transpilers or bundlers, only a few polyfills.

At first, I was not excited for this. But at the end, I’ve had quite some fun! It was quite a nice challenge, and I’ve learned something new about the language I’ve been using every day for ages. Gotta do this more often.

Mother's day by country

kytta,
@kytta@fosstodon.org avatar

@jeffmcneill the data is a bit misleading for some countries, like Russia. 8th of March is not Mother's Day, but the International Women's Day, where it is customary to congratulate mothers, of course.

But Russia also has a Mother's Day on the last Sunday in November. In Kazakhstan, it's on the third Sunday in September. In Belarus, it's 14th of October.

The English Wikipedia page does list both dates: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mother%27s_Day
