I have strong opinions about promotion and career advancement that differ from most Big Tech execs. There's a lot of concern about big tech companies that there is "promo obsession," where employees only care about getting promoted. I don't believe in promo obsession. I think it's misaligned incentives. Let me explain 1/n.

@mekkaokereke Purely anecdotally, several times during my career I told my manager that I'd immediately resign if they promoted me. I know of a couple other folks who've done the same.

As a corollary to the Peter Principle, occasionally some engineers find the spot in which they are most effective and most personally satisfied. They will refuse to budge without sufficient rational motivation.

@NudelnAlDente @mekkaokereke Agreed. There's also a technical track where, as a Release Engineer/Devops Guy, I would have been promoted into evangelist. The career change there would have been from gleeful deep-in-the muck software janitorial services (which I still adore after 40 years) to Chief Persuader And Ted Talk Giver, which is just not my jam.

Whenever I use the word "short" in an expression e.g. "I came up short" "sorry if I was short with you" "I stopped short of..." it feels like a self-referential play on words but, then I remember, on the internet nobody knows you're short!

Is there a term (English or not) for when people make something work for them in a way that is busted as hell but charmingly effective and doesnt need to be improved? Im thinking of dragging windows around in a screen recording frame as a way of editing videos rn, but also stuff like idk using a keychain ring on a pants zipper to loop around a button and keep it up, etc. The emphasis is more on the unexpectedness or laterality of approaches than them being "bad."

"Hack" or "kludge" implies too much jankiness and is usually negative, "macgyvering" or "Jerry rigging" is too specific to using only what is on hand to do something, there is a Brazilian word "gambiarra" that I think is quite close but I don't have the cultural context to tell.

Edit: I think gambiarra is what im looking for here, thanks @catzilla !

Content-wise, of course, it was a tepid, don't-rock-the-administration's policy response to my complaints of the U.S. support for Israel's genocidal invasion of Gaza, but baby-steps man, baby-steps.

    @liztai Back in the before times, I did an annual event I called 'Drinkies'. I announced a bar somewhere in the world, a date and time. There was no other organization. Anyone was invited. Who ever showed up just showed up. Any other activities that spun off were spontaneous from the participants.

    It was a blast.

    The whole direction of our collective political will starts with state representatives, school board members, sheriffs, health inspectors and so on. These are the living roots of our now-fragile democracy. The big elections are important, the small ones doubly so, like capillaries feeding into veins.
