I used to babysit a lot, and I was kind of famous for getting kids to try foods they normally wouldn't. I was never pushy about it, just included them in the shopping/harvesting/cooking process, and asked them to try a little bite of everything, and to remember that your tastebuds change as you age, so keep on trying stuff.

This backfired on me occasionally though. Once as an adventure, we went to a Japanese restaurant, and I ordered the kiddos some Katsu (who doesn't love something fried with dippy sauce), and got myself a plate of sushi rolls and sashimi. Well, since I always asked them to try one bite of something new, they looked at me expectantly, so I let them try a bit of each. Turns out they were all in for sushi, and those little nerds ate most of my plate, and then they always wanted to go. Kids, I don't have sushi money every day!

WagesOf,

@RickiTarr sushi is surprisingly cheap if you can stomach (heh) the tiny risk* of getting your fish frozen at the grocery.

Mahi, ahi, swordfish and yellowtail show up at my local grocery often.

Some rice and rolling pads and you can have some fun making rolls.

It's only a dumb rumor, but if this goes down we might as well turn off the lights on #gaming as we know it. Especially all the #Linux and #Proton goodness that #Valve has pushed forward.

Rumour claims Microsoft is preparing a $16B offer to acquire Valve | KitGuru
https://www.kitguru.net/gaming/matthew-wilson/rumour-claims-microsoft-is-preparing-a-16b-offer-to-acquire-valve/

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@tallawk why would Microsoft kill proton?

You can install Linux inside of windows 11 with a single command and Microsoft uses Linux all over the place.

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@tallawk if they buy steam it's probably to leverage proton and steamos rather than try to make windows desktop work on a handheld.

The #1 gripe on every pc handheld is that windows sucks on handheld. If MS buys steam steamos can get an oobe with gamepass within a few weeks.

Buying valve is cheaper, and more importantly, faster than doing their own windows for handheld. That doesn't kill proton, it expands it.

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@tallawk OK, you're wrong that ms could "just make a kernel and custom UI" magically materialize tomorrow or even next year, and they're very seriously working on a gaming version of Windows for handheld already, but you're obviously locked in on the idea that they hate Linux so...

Just found out, entirely by accident, that I'm under a tornado watch. I only discovered it because of a national news story I happened to notice most of the way down the page on CNN about an especially dangerous weather condition in the midwest.

And I'm like.. "Wait, I'm in the midwest!" I clicked the story.

Turns out, yeah, my county is in the watch area and there's a line of serious storms coming that have already spawned tornadoes and killed people today.

No trace of this in Apple Weather.

Scarlett Johansson’s is a high-profile example of the growing need for transparency in AI models – anyone who believes their voice is used without their permission would ask the same questions she is asking now.

My bill, the AI Foundation Model Transparency Act would ensure that those questions are answered by ensuring AI foundation models share key information with regulators and the public.

Now, everyone is so furious about OpenAI stealing a beloved celebrity's voice. But what about the many artists, writers/authors, and creators whose copyrighted works OpenAI stole to create works resembling and replacing those people's products? Not famous enough to generate the same outrage, right? At least now, everyone knows how bad Sam Altman is. He thinks he is above the law. I'm glad someone is standing up to this bully and I hope something good come out of it.

Microsoft’s Build developer conference doesn’t kick off until tomorrow, but the tech giant just couldn’t wait to lift the lid on some major announcements at an event that wasn’t livestreamed for the public.

As well as confirming some upcoming AI features for Windows 11, Microsoft unveiled its vision for so-called “AI PCs”, which are designed to run a lot of generative AI processes locally instead of in the cloud. The biggest takeaway? These so-called Copilot+ PCs will reportedly be 58% faster than the M3-powered MacBook Air, and a new Surface laptop will be one of the first to hit stores.

Here’s more on all the announcements from @engadget.

This https://www.macrumors.com/2024/05/17/ios-17-5-bug-wiped-devices-photos-resurfacing/ is kinda bad, but it's probably NOT actually a bug anymore - it's probably only happening now because they fixed the original bug that prevented the originals from actually being deleted in the first place.

At least... I hope so!

They really need to comment on this, though.

Edit: Okay, I mean, obviously it's still a bad bug, but maybe it's on the server side now. Which is especially bad. But they could fix without an update.

“in court yesterday, actually, I was sitting close enough that I could look over Trump’s shoulder and see what he was reading. at one point, he was actually reading the quotes that these individuals were— and going through and making notations with a pen, on the paper, while testimony was going on. while Michael Cohen was testifying against him, he was actually going through and editing and annotating the quotes.”

Never ceases to stump me that we have the technology to kill 99.95% of airborne viruses, proven to work, non-invasive, cheap to deploy and install, and is produced at scale already and we just like - collectively - kind of just don't really use it.

HEPA-grade air filtration is proven, cheap, and makes everyone's lives strictly better. It, like, makes zero fiscal sense for governments not to mandate its use in all covered public spaces ASAP.

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

@yosh your assertion that it's cheap is wrong.

We don't mandate HEPA filters because it's a massive cost and doesn't actually stop virus spread in itself.

Nano particle level filtration is insanely expensive and you'd need to change the air completely every few minutes to even have a chance to make a dent at all.

WagesOf,
@WagesOf@gamepad.club avatar

They told me: "You should get more loans to increase your credit score."

The system is predatory and wants you to be in debt.

Credit scores are one of the biggest scams.

WagesOf,

@FluentInFinance amazingly enough I have no debt at all and an 800+ credit score.

Which would be impossible if what you're saying is true.

But you obviously have no clue how credit scores are calculated. They are forced, by law, to publish how they're calculated and what inputs they're basing your specific score on.

Your ignorance is your fault.

Stop spreading it around.
