I’m not sure how to perform an undo action in visionOS; however, dear reader, vigorously shaking one’s head does not work.

Ouch.

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@snazzyq Dang, that sucks. Maybe briefly shaking your head left and right quickly to undo something should be a feature?

i am totally overwhelmed and fascinated by this online chat portal called MagViz. apparently based on an on-line chat predecessor from the 80s called DDIAL or DiversiDial

someone spent an incredible amount of time making this UI feel good. you can even set your baud rate so the text flows at reading speed

Quinn9282,

@vga256 Has to be the coolest online chat portal I've ever seen! I wonder how long it took for the devs to perfect the UI, it's amazing!

there’s a real joy in attaching an iTrip FM transmitter to an old Mini.

the sony S2 boombox behind is of a similar vintage, and has a completely different yet complementary aesthetic. i sure miss the aspirational design of the early 2000s

@vga256 What a lovely early 2000s aesthetically-designed boombox! That "aspirational" design language has to be one of my favorite design aesthetics! 😌 🥰

Not sure if this is a real issue or not, but I've heard some people mention that apparently some government agencies out there only use Twitter/X accounts to provide PSAs and other alerts, which, if true, is a MASSIVE issue that needs to be rectified ASAP.

With #Nitter falling apart, and with no way to view a profile's chronological timeline for such high-importance accounts on Twitter/X without logging in, any agencies that do such practices NEED TO ADD NEW COMMUNICATION OUTLETS ASAP.

@alternativeto@mas.to avatar

The Nitter project, a privacy-oriented X/Twitter front-end, has been discontinued by its owner. The decision is linked to X/Twitter's move to disable the creation of guest accounts, on which Nitter was heavily relying.
https://alternativeto.net/news/2024/1/privacy-oriented-x-front-end-nitter-is-shutting-down-following-changes-to-guest-accounts/

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@alternativeto Man, that's sad, and a huge loss for the free and accessible Internet. There are still a bunch of accounts on there I check on from time to time, but I guess I won't be seeing them ever again on Twitter/X anymore once all the last Nitter instances fall offline if they haven't already.

Thanks Elon for benefiting nobody. Fuck you. 🖕

Redoing my #introduction again since it's now been a quarter of a year since I first joined Mastodon:

Hello! 👋 I'm an #autistic Gen Z-er born in the mid-2000s, and I go by the name "Quinn" (with he/him pronouns) on most Internet platforms. I'm a fan of #Indieweb, #SmallWeb, #RSS, #NNTP, and the #Fediverse! 😁

The only two social media platforms I currently use are Mastodon and YouTube. I haven't really dabbled with any other social medias at this point.

My website is https://quinn9282.neocities.org!

Feel free to add your own RSS feeds to your blog or newsletter to the service on the website to help grow the service! It's currently hosting 861 feeds, and serving 5,319,339 articles at the time of this post.

Quinn9282, to ai
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but this is something I'm wondering about #AI scraping websites on the Internet.

Like, if AI bots start scraping bad quality LLM-generated content, then use that to generate even lower quality content. Then that even lower quality content gets published somewhere, gets scraped by another AI bot, and is used to generate even worse quality content. Then the cycle repeats over and over again.

If that ends up happening, then the Internet is screwed. Without question.

AT&T is sending out letters warning they want to kill virtually all landlines (and perhaps related data circuits where fiber is unavailable) across essentially their entire coverage area throughout California. This would have devastating effects. Related CPUC meetings will be taking place through March.

Landlines provide crucial services for individuals, businesses, and other organizations in a wide variety of situations -- not just emergencies when cellular and Internet service tends to rapidly fail, but also for vast numbers of people in areas with poor, unreliable, or in many cases (even in large sections of major cities!) NO cell service, NO fiber, etc.

Landlines often provide the only available communication in a wide variety of security and safety situations, from elevators to interior spaces of all sorts where cell service simply doesn't work.

Many disabled and other persons have crucial equipment that depends on landlines. Often they are not tech-savvy and do not have friends or relatives to help them through forced technology changes.

AT&T has been shirking its public safety responsibilities for years, while still leveraging their effective monopoly on services in so many areas.

Their new effort must be stopped. I'll have much more to say about this as the situation progresses.

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@lauren Do you have an image or writing of what the letter says? I can't find the letter mentioned anywhere (unless it's all on Twitter, which I can't use the search function on there without logging in).

Lately, I have been working on Discovery system, Notification system, and related widgets.

The discovery system is a way to organically help players keep track of things to investigate as well as provide feedback for exploration efforts. It keeps track of generic, easy to track things, as well as it can run functions of fairly arbitrary complexity to monitor various events.

Windows 8 (2012) marked the 1st time Windows was without a Start menu in almost 20 years. Windows Program Manager Chaitanya Sareen explained, “We thought of the desktop as an app,” & the Start menu was removed to reflect a shift away from the desktop as the primary interface of the OS.

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@windowsonwindows I mainly liked Windows 8 from a UI design (outside of the Start Menu and Metro apps of course) and performance standpoint. In my view, Windows 8 wasn't a bad OS in itself per-say, it was mostly the execution of it that sucked the most if you didn't run it on a Tablet PC.

The ability to change features, prices, and availability of things you've already paid for is a powerful temptation to corporations.
Inkjet printers were always a sleazy business, but once these printers got directly connected to the internet, companies like HP started pushing out "security updates" that modified your printer to make it reject the third-party ink you'd paid for:
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/11/ink-stained-wretches-battle-soul-digital-freedom-taking-place-inside-your-printer
Now, this scam wouldn't work if you could just put things back the way they were before the "update," which is where the DRM comes in.

A thicket of IP laws make reverse-engineering DRM-encumbered products into a felony.
Combine always-on network access with indiscriminate criminalization of user modification, and the enshittification will follow, as surely as night follows day.

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@cdarwin @pluralistic Funnily enough, HP decided to launch an advertising campaign for their printers recently with the tagline "made to be less hated", in a rather poor attempt at trying to quell the anger with the ink DRM they pushed out and win back consumers again.

AFAICT, all this ad campaign really did is make people hate HP even more (if they weren't already hated enough for their anti-consumer behavior over the years).

When science showed in the 70s that gas stoves produced harmful indoor air pollution, the industry reached for tobacco’s PR playbook by:

✖️ casting doubt on negative findings
✖️ funding its own biased research

There’s still plenty of debate about whether gas stoves belong in homes, but it’s important to know where the “evidence” comes from, and to expose the tactics that vested interest groups have used for years.

@timbray Shame on Adobe for not doing anything about these images. All this does is spread misinformation and benefits nothing else.

On another note, if any stock photo website you use allows people to upload and sell AI generated content on there in the future, it's time to find another website. Not only because of it's potential to spread misinformation/fake images like this, but it also takes away revenue from actual contributors who aren't using AI for their images.

"The Laptop That Wouldn't Die"

In a few of my blog posts on right-to-repair culture, I've mentioned my 12-year-old Thinkpad T420

It is: indestructible

My six-year-old Macbook Pro just died, so I'm using the thinkpad while I await a replacement

This Thinkpad has outlived two of my top of the line Macbooks

It was built when my eldest son was six ... he's now in college

And it's still going

My ode to it: https://clivethompson.medium.com/the-laptop-that-wont-die-0c478c3fe46c

@clive I don't own one myself, but I've seen many people online who use ThinkPads from that same era (mid 2000s-early 2010s) and they always rate them pretty highly (with or without Linux). They really were, and still are excellent machines and I wish they (and other modern laptops) were still built to that same standard today.
