Monday morning rewind.
Can you hear it?

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@Skepticat I'm a bit young to have actually experienced this (already had broadband internet when I was born) so I didn't experience this in practice. I only "hear" the sound of the modem because I know it from videos of dial-up modems on the Internet.

But judging from seeing videos of people dialing-up nowadays, I could probably imagine the struggle if I was alive back in those days.

I’m tired of a lifetime of springing forward and falling back. Can’t we just do something once and stay there? Asking for a nation.

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@georgetakei Literally the only perceived "benefit" that I can think of for DST is that you'll get an extra hour of sleep on the night of the fall DST change (assuming you actually make use of it and sleep through most of the night, since it only happens once a year). Other than that, I don't see any other "benefits" of DST.

When the natural gas industry used the playbook from Big Tobacco

As early as the 1970s, research showed that gas stoves produced indoor air pollution.

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@arstechnica I've never personally entertained the idea of a gas stove (air pollution, heat generation, and overall practicality). The house I grew up in always had an electric stove since it was built in the early 2000s, and most other non-commercial buildings and new-ish houses I've visited almost always have electric stoves (at least where I live).

Fascinating both for what it says about dev & what it says about statistics:

A gamedev realized Linux users were just 5.8% of their sales, but represented 38% of bug reports.

Then they looked at those numbers closer, and realized. Linux users were not experiencing more bugs. Almost none of the Linux-user bugs were Linux-related. Linux users were simply more likely to file bugs.

Their conclusion: A linux port pays for itself bc it nerdsnipes ppl into giving u free QA

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@mcc It's always been my experience that most open source/Linux software devs tend to care more about bug reports than most corporations do. Like you'll submit a bug report and it might actually get fixed.

...Unlike most corporate software, where you'll submit a bug report, and it NEVER gets fixed, even if a lot of people are having the same problem. The only time they might actually care about bug reports is if it prevents you from properly using/opening the software at all...

Musk saying cis is a slur

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@taylorlorenz Other meanings/uses of "cis" besides "cisgender":

cis(θ) - a trigonometric function

cis - a genus of beetle

Cis–trans isomerism - a certain arrangement of atoms within molecules in chemistry

Cis-regulatory elements - regions of DNA that regulate transcription of other genes

Cis, Trentino - a place in Italy

Cis - name of two villages in Poland

CIS - a common acronym for many things

C# - known as "cis" in some European notations

Hi, I'm stuck waiting on laundry to finish and am bored, so why don't I come on here and write some hot takes about YouTube?

I mean, I can think of several reasons, but too bad I'll do it anyway.

Knowing the leanings of the folks on this particular platform this is likely to spark some debate, but note that I'm not trying to paint YouTube as a saint - in fact, the first thing I want to talk about is a strategy they've taken which puts me and all YT creators in a weird place:

Quinn9282,
@Quinn9282@mas.to avatar

@anyprophet @TechConnectify Same here! I don't necessarily have a problem with ads, as long as a) there aren't too many and b) are not constantly flooded with scams, misleading information, malware ("activate [X] for free"), and other junk.

The most common scam ads I see on YouTube at the moment (and have for the past few years) are crypto/AI investment scams, pseudoscientific supplement scams, get-rich-quick schemes, and "free [video game currency]" scams, among other things.
