An open source project that let people view tweets without going to Twitter.com has shut down, as Elon Musk's changes seem to have closed off all possible ways to access the Twitter network without a user account.
#Nitter provided an alternative front-end to Twitter but has been struggling for months. Nitter.net, the official Nitter instance, went down a few weeks ago.
I am sorry to see the end of Nitter. It provided a safe, private means of accessing X/Twitter, especially via RSS. I know there is no love here on Mastodon for those still on X/Twitter, but in my view there are still a few people on there who are worth reading. I will miss hearing those voices.
Oh, Nitter.net TLS certificate expired a week ago. But I guess it's a tad of encouragement to get the people to decentralize a little and pick other instances, other than the "flagship" one.
Not sure if this is a real issue or not, but I've heard some people mention that apparently some government agencies out there only use Twitter/X accounts to provide PSAs and other alerts, which, if true, is a MASSIVE issue that needs to be rectified ASAP.
With #Nitter falling apart, and with no way to view a profile's chronological timeline for such high-importance accounts on Twitter/X without logging in, any agencies that do such practices NEED TO ADD NEW COMMUNICATION OUTLETS ASAP.
Remember this post of mine, a walkthrough of how to use Nitter, archive.org, and archive.ph to fully archive tweets (including tweets higher and lower in the thread)? https://kolektiva.social/ Well, since I made that post, two things have happened:
Archive.ph stopped saving archive.org captures of nitter.net
Nitter shut down
It's now just about impossible to properly archive tweets. You can still right click and save the page, and you can still use archiveweb.page, but they're so much less user-friendly and so much harder to share.
