I'm talking to a journalist in a bit about NASA's new "space sustainability strategy" and this one sentence from the abstract seems to sum it up:

"Given the substantial upfront expenditures required to develop and deploy remediation capabilities and the potential delay in receiving benefits, these motivations do not appear to be sufficient to incentivize immediate action"

I'm going to have to read this more carefully, but did NASA just say they don't care about orbit?!

@Andreas @sundogplanets Sadly, I doubt it. Compare the cross-sectional area of say 100k satellites to the size of the earth, even assuming such satellites re-radiate all energy away from the earth, which in fact they won’t do.

It seems, IS, utterly crazy, that amidst everything else the UK government is ruthlessly continuing its clampdown on climate protesters. But it is.

    So the good news is that the gender pay gap continues to close, although its still around 9% in aggregate terms (with wide variations).... but, its now 55 years since the Equal Py Act - that's at least two generations - and still we haven't made it to full equality.

    Yet more evidence that sexism continues to pattern our society & we (still) need to work on eradicating it.

    @ChrisMayLA6 Am I right in saying this isn’t really a ‘pay gap’ any more, it’s a ‘job gap’? Surely no company still pays women less than men for the identical work, it’s more that the average job for men is more highly paid than the average job for women. Some of this may be differing lifestyle choices. I wonder what effect the pandemic will prove to have had on that, as many more people choose life over work in the work/life balance?

    Years ago, I realized I was forgetting more than I recalled about the many studies I read that found #COVID19 was NOT just a mild, acute illness but led to chronic health problems. So, I created a spreadsheet to track these studies. Over the last two years or so, I've read significant parts of over 1,500 research studies, and my spreadsheet is approaching 525 reports that demonstrate COVID leaves people with damage to brains, hearts, immune systems, reproductive systems, and other organs.     @CatherineFlick @Edent Real books are still important to me. I love to get them as presents, I love the pile by my bedside waiting to be read, I love how my bookshelves help to define me, and I love being able to hand a book to a friend with a ‘I think you’ll enjoy this’. I love to hold them, and I love how the sight of one can evoke memories of childhood, past lovers or other significant milestones in my life. I do read on my tablet too, but for me that is a very diminished experience.

    I feel for Princess Kate. Double whammy of having to deal with cancer at a fairly early age with young children and being a very public person on top of that. It’s no wonder she has been out of the public eye. And also very reasonable to want to keep her medical information private.

    In the 18 days since he won a byelection claiming he would represent the people of Rochdale and stand up for Gaza in Parliament, George Galloway has announced he could run against Andy Burnham in the Manchester Mayoral election and, today, failed to turn up in the House of Commons for a UQ on Gaza.
    I hope all of you who thought his victory was a good thing are getting it now.
