10 years or so ago I went to Australia and saw that the big thing was bao buns. Now it’s finally caught up here. Like bubble tea and good coffee the UK is roughly a decade behind Australian culinary trends. https://www.theguardian.com/business/article/2024/may/20/sales-of-bao-buns-on-a-roll-as-britons-fall-in-love-with-asian-treat

@kofanchen possibly, Australia is known for its fusion food so regularly transforms non western food for western audiences :)

Village WhatsApp groups are such great spaces to find out how people think the internet works. Just write “is anyone having trouble with their internet?” And immediately you’ll get all kinds of bizarre theories about what to do to get it back. Today’s: “we had a power cut so it might take a while to come back on”

@danieldurrans hahahaha wow that is so accurate 🤣🤣

I am working on a different colour way of the design!
Ms DT has nabbed the original!
She just went daft when she saw it!!

@Edent@mastodon.social avatar

Hey #academia friends.

If - and it is a very big if - I wanted to start a PhD in about a year's time, what should I do now to prepare?

I got my MSc a year ago. I haven't started looking at any specific programmes yet.

UK-based tips especially appreciated!

CatherineFlick,
@CatherineFlick@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@Edent happy to chat about PhDs! Can find me at EMF too :) LIED on the phone system :)

Exactly what I talked about in my TEDx talk the other night - the incentives just don’t align with making responsible technology. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/article/2024/may/18/openai-putting-shiny-products-above-safety-says-departing-researcher

Milley’s comments about the second world war echoed in my head. It was, frankly, jarring to hear a recent top US official defend Israel’s mass killing of Gazan civilians by invoking wartime massacres that not only preceded the Geneva Conventions, but helped justify their creation.

This Defector article is spot on about Kevin Roose. He’s a consummate band wagon jumper, licking the boots of SV VCs and other useless fools. https://defector.com/if-kevin-roose-was-chatgpt-with-a-spray-on-beard-could-anyone-tell
