the idea that someone flashes their status by wearing an expensive watch is so beyond me, it's like reading about the behavior of another species. I have never, ever noticed an expensive watch. maybe a cool one, with a lil calculator.

@lzg i only learned recently about a literal nail as a fashion object

today i've been learning how automatic transmissions work

i know how manual ones work, physically changing which gears are interacting, with or without synchromesh

but i didn't realise that automatic ones work on a different principle, using planetary gear boxes and applying a clutch to the ring gear to change the output ratio

that, and planetary gearboxes with clutches to change gears go back as far as the model t

not to call ai a big woop of nothing but slack absolutely slaughtering any remaining trust they have in order to provide "emoji suggestions" is incredible

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

for context, slack is launching "AI Features" trained on global data

and you can tell it's being launched without purpose as the list of benefits includes "emoji autocomplete"

like

no-one in their right mind would go "so we're going to make every sabox customer panic so slack knows if to use the party hat emoji or the party baloons emoju by default"

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

this is the funniest thing slack's done since they rebranded themselves as a tool for remote work, despite years of "no-one gets remote work at slack"

Either my N95 stealing skills are still crap, or they don't do much against industrial strength cleaner fumes. Guessing the latter.

tef,

@bitprophet n95s don't do much against volatile organic chemicals

well, they do, but

Gonna miss the shit out of #Nix unless its governance stuff manages to pull out of the nosedive (though I've heard mildly positive news lately…).

Didn't have linkchecker installed, need it for checking my blog posts.

Classical config management: typically apt install linkchecker, then completely forget to go back and add it to the “website" CM recipe.

Nix/OS: add to the repo's flake.nix, rerun nix develop, bing bong so simple, any future setup of this repo will benefit.

made "named arguments" work on the rpc toy, which is fun because go does not have named arguments, and you also can't use reflect to get the names of arguments

which is neat

and well, i'm also thinking about how armies were stuffed with inbred nobility, people who believed they were born to rule, and how they kept getting defeated by military geniuses

@glyph i don't know if pywin32 is a gigantic dependency but

https://github.com/mhammond/pywin32/blob/main/win32/Lib/win32timezone.py#L694

win32timezone.TimeZoneInfo.local() does what you want, i think?

tef,
@tef@mastodon.social avatar

@glyph i did also find a ctypes example of calling kernel32.GetTimeZoneInformation

For the last two years I've been semi-daily posting "What I'm Listening to Today" links here. Mastodon has some problems with threads containing hundreds of posts, so I re-create the thread once a year.

If you'd like to see, here's my "year two" thread: https://mastodon.social/@mcc/110266770603341546

Or, alternately, every song from year two in the least practical format possible: A 301-song, 38-hour YouTube playlist (note: video #1 contains flashing):

And here's the thread for "year three":
