People are getting paid for #publishing#AI-written #books, in an #author's name, when in fact the author did not, and knew nothing about this happening.
Then, when the author tries to do something about it to stop this obvious #abuse, they are told no.
"The #EU is ready to agree that immediate #OpenAccess to papers reporting publicly funded research should become the norm, w/o authors having to pay fees & that the bloc should support #nonprofit scholarly publishing models.
Today I will be posting thoughts about Aaron Swartz, who died on this day in 2013. The academic community should be much more aware of him, and challenge the massive problem of academic publishing that we are all part of. Let's make it our mission to tell people about Aaron and what he stood for.
I'm hearing chatter that Grammarly has just admitted to using its users' work to train an AI--without consent. That means it's been stealing/scraping your work and writing, without compensation.
If you use that particular service, you might want to look into that. #publishing#writing
"More than 40 leading scientists have resigned en masse from the editorial board of a top science journal in protest at what they describe as the “greed” of publishing giant Elsevier."
Elsevier's profit margin is around 40%. Claiming that academic publishers prey on researchers, more than forty leading scientists are setting up "a nonprofit open-access journal".
I wrote a new book, called YOU DESERVE A TECH UNION. It’s coming out real soon. (I’m freaking out a little tbh!!) If you’d like to support the book slash get the word out, here’s how you can help!
As the Canadian media landscape evolves with Meta shutting off news in response to the incoming Online News Act, and with increasing fake news on X, we're committed to bridging the gap between publishers and readers. We already partner with @CBC, @globeandmail, @hakaimagazine, Macleans, Daily Hive, @thetyee, Montecristo and more.
One of our Canadian editors, @AileenLalor, wrote how publishers can create a presence on our platform.
An ex-philosopher friend remarked to me yesterday that academics judging prestige and success by citation metrics incentivizes the same thing in slow-motion as social media algorithms judging success of content creators by engagement metrics, and it has thrown me into an existential crisis.
This hedge-fund company is buying up US #newspapers, and killing them. They own the Chicago #Tribune, Baltimore Sun, San Jose Mercury News, #DenverPost, San Diego Union-Tribune, various local papers and more. Their days are numbered.
This is a big deal.
Without big news outlets, who covers a wide variety of beats (with #reporters who are specialized in those areas), does investigative reporting, uncover then publicize shady activities, and have a pulse on local shenanigans, and monitor #misinformation?
Smaller, independent papers can't do it -- while they may do a good job, they are generally focused on only 1 or 2 areas.
This article gives a stunning look at what's happening. If you feel the quality of journalism has gone down, things like this is why.
Looking back more than 20 years and remembering all the colleagues boasting about how inviting GlamMag editors for dinner got them their papers, I guess it was an inevitable development that some would start skipping the dinner part 🤣
Replacing journals would get rid of more than just this nasty business:
I got the green light to go hunting for a blind audiobook narrator! I believe in putting my money back into the community, so anyone know where I can find some blind audiobook narrators? #VoiceOver#AudioBook#Publishing
I needed a journal article for research, and I couldn't find it anywhere. Not through libraries, not from the publisher. In the end I emailed the author, a little hesitantly. He sent me the article in 15 minutes.
Academic publishing being the mess it is, never discount the power of asking the author directly.
Here's the latest in publisher impersonation, courtesy of Pen2Paper Press. I don't know what fee the author was asked for, but I've heard from writers who paid as much as $7,500 for "services" from this scammer @simonschuster#WriterBeware#WritingCommunity#Publishing#Scams
I just realized that one of my Twitter threads, then followed by a peer-reviewed paper in English (meanwhile published in open access), has been plagiarized in a publication in a different language. What would you do? I'm considering approaching the journal. #AcademicTwitter#AcademicWriting#Publications#Publishing
"The modestly funded West Haven Library has spent more than $12,000 over the last three years to lease just 276 additional digital titles beyond what patrons can access through a consortium of public libraries. Eighty-four of those books are no longer available. If that same amount had been spent on paper books, it would have covered about 800 titles."
In the words of Fatboy Slim, "we've come a long long way together." Here, @miaq breaks down Flipboard's federation journey so far.
"We could [federate Flipboard] with a quick flip of the switch but we’ve chosen to act more intentionally," she writes. "We’re taking measured steps to test, learn, and ensure that everything we’re doing stays true to our values and those of the fediverse. Maintaining quality is top of the list."
