On positioning: Every time I do sociolinguistic fieldwork or conduct interviews, people assume I am a student 🙃 I could decide to be angry, and I am, at a structural/systemic level, but I think I also use it to my advantage to minimize inherent power hierarchies... Thoughts?

“We were surprised by how brazenly the male researchers described their priorities, for example that they actively didn’t respond to emails,” says Nanna Mik-Meyer, professor at Copenhagen Business School.

Looking for literature on German in the Netherlands for a sociolinguistics class next semester!
I'm especially interested the German-speaking communities abroad (who is part of it, what languages do they speak) & language ideologies around German in the Dutch context. Thanks! ☺️

🚨 Help needed: Are there here any (former) PhD students who did a cotutelle between the Netherlands and Germany (specifically these two countries) and could help me finalizing a contract for my PhD student?

Many thanks! 🙏

When reflecting on my PhD work, I miss the focus on ONE project. Post PhD life often feels scattered, with lots of (side) projects, supervision of very different topics, data from here and there, etc. I certainly do not miss the uncertainty & I am grateful to work on new things!

But I do feel that we would benefit from doing less. It's a weird thing—as you advance your career, it feels like the job never really gets easier but only fuller. Thoughts, anyone?

@skyglowberlin Love that! May steal it :)
During my PhD, I dare to say I was doing "one thing well", and it's the shift to the category "lots of things poorly" that I find hard to accept :/

love this so much—a word cloud of my papers' titles! doesn't produce as strong results as it could since I've been publishing in 3 languages for years, but still quite cool, don't you think?

Genuine question: Every time I receive anonymous peer-review suggesting "major revisions", I find the revisions, in fact, really minor: Add a definition here, explain an argument more in detail over there, justify the choice for X, describe the data better. Usually much needed, but with no change in the overall argument, structure, etc.

Wondering if others feel the same way. Are we maybe afraid of being too lenient/not "academic" enough if the suggested revisions are not that big? #Academic

My students will soon submit a (digital) poster presenting the results of a small empirical study. Any ideas how to invite everyone to take a look at all posters and foster productive discussions during the last session (in presence)?

Thank you!

I have to say that the permanent enactment of academic business ("I don't have a minute for myself", "I cannot commit to any meeting in the next 6 weeks") is really depressing—as it shows how overworked everyone is AND how some like to glorify it.

Somehow I cannot download the following paper from my university library and I need to cite a specific page, can anyone help?

Something we don't talk about enough when encouraging academics to say no and protect their time is how passive-aggressive the reactions of (While, old-ish, male) scholars can be when you refuse to follow their personal deadlines #Academia #WomenInAcademia

@benjamingeer Totally! It's unfortunately not specifically a French issue though—it's the case in most (Western) countries where the dominant language is a prestige language (French, English, German...). It's very true that multilingual families often end up not communicating in their home/family/heritage language(s) with the second or third generation, fearing they could be blamed for their supposed "lack of integration"...

BerLinguistin,
@BerLinguistin@mas.to avatar

@benjamingeer I'll share later! There are a few successful initiatives but it takes for ever (generations)...

Most begin with teachers:
Wiese, Heike, Katharina Mayr, Philipp Krämer, Patrick Seeger, Hans-Georg Müller & Verena Mezger. 2015. Changing teachers’ attitudes towards linguistic diversity: effects of an anti-bias programme. In International Journal of Applied Linguistics, vol. 27, 1–23. http://doi.wiley.com/10.1111/ijal.12121. (22 October, 2019).
