#BirdFlu Is Infecting More #Mammals. What Does That Mean for Us? #H5N1, #avianflu#virus, killed tens of thousands of #marinemammals, and infiltrated American #livestock for first time.
H5N1, one of the many viruses that cause bird flu, had already killed at least 24,000 South American sea lions along the coasts in less than a year. Now comes for elephant seals.
Scientists are working quickly to assess how it is evolving and risk it poses to humans #Maskup
Environmentally sustainable plant-based dishes in restaurants and cafes?
"Occasionally ordering a plant-based meal instead of a meat dish can greatly reduce the environmental footprint of the global food system. Animal agriculture accounts for 56% of food-related greenhouse gas emissions but produces only 18% of calories and 37% of protein."
"This means a family of four ordering plant-based meat burgers instead of beef patties saves carbon emissions equal to driving from Brisbane to the Gold Coast."
#Scotland is an interesting laboratory for #rewilding, some under community ownership.
Tarras Valley has most of the ingredients I'd expect for carbon sinks preservation, including a focus on peatland restoration and a pragmatic decision to cut down mature commercial forests. They delayed action on the sheep farm side: I wonder how long that's sustainable. https://www.tarrasvalleynaturereserve.org/projects/
At least 2,250 herder families have lost more 70 percent of their #livestock, as this year’s #dzud blankets grazing lands in deep #snow and #ice and there are predictions many more animals will be unable to survive the next few weeks.
During #dzuds, temperatures in some parts of the country fall as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius (minus 58 Fahrenheit)
Hi all, time for some #introductions ! I'm Ty, and I've lived on ~50 acres of stolen Oneida land for the last 10 yrs with my partner and kids. We have some #livestock and a couple of #dogs. We #forage and #garden, spin and weave, and generate more electricity than we consume. We teach and learn and try new things.
Currently we're making maple syrup and on #lamb watch for new babies so feel free to follow if you're into that kind of thing. I work at #foss non-profit doing data stuff, so I'll also have thoughts on #tech#enshittification and #privacy.
I'm consolidating my myriad fediverse accounts here so some folks might know me as @SolArlo or @bmez etc. I just like *Key/[Fire|Ice][Fish|Shrimp] better, and appreciate the work the infosec.exchange folks do! Howdy.
More than two million animals have died in Mongolia so far this winter, a government official said today, as the country endures extreme cold and snow... But this winter has been more severe than usual, with lower than normal temperatures and very heavy snowfall, the United Nations said in a recent report....
#birds#Poultry#Livestock#Rarebreeds One of the turkey breeds I have choosen its a UK heirloom breed on the rare breeds watch list.I used to have a hen turkey called Chrissy at my last place but when we were forced out of the house she went to a friend (for breeding not eating ) https://www.rbst.org.uk/pied-crollwitzer
They are good egg layers and quite small for turkeys so they need less space.Chrissy was very tame she would fly across the garden and perch on my shoulder
Scientists and the general public have long dismissed the cognitive abilities of cows, pigs, and other livestock. But farm animals are capable of much more than we think.
An Invasive Tick That Can Clone Itself Is Spreading Across the U.S., Threatening Livestock
Researchers documented three cows in Ohio killed by Asian longhorned ticks, which can lay up to 2,000 eggs without needing to mate
The ticks pose a serious threat to livestock, because they congregate in the thousands and can drain an entire animal of blood.
"#Switzerland signed the #BernConvention... in 1979... that list the #gray#wolf as a strictly protected species, meaning it should not be “disturbed, captured, or killed.” #EU countries...aren’t able to kill wolves except in exceptional cases, but Switzerland exploited flexibility in the Bern Convention’s Article 9 ...(allowing) cantonal hunting offices to shoot “problem wolves” that cause considerable #damage to #livestock with the consent of the federal government"
There was a unanimous decision to let people into the Þórkátlustað district only (less than twenty homes).
The first animals are rescued from the Þórkátlustað district. People have only 5 minutes to pick up belongings and pets/animals.
According to Red Cross Iceland, a animal rescue operation is underway to bring the horses from the riding area north of Austurver to safety.
The food industry’s climate footprint is immense, accounting for about a third of global greenhouse gases. Livestock, which releases potent methane, makes up 14.5% of worldwide emissions
Disclosed emissions from the world’s 20 largest publicly-listed meat and dairy companies rose 3.3% from 2022 levels
According to the #Guardian, former officials at the #FAO claimed that they faced censorship, sabotage, and victimization for more than a decade after they published a landmark report in 2006 called Livestock’s Long Shadow.
It estimated that #livestock, mostly #cattle, accounted for 18% of global greenhouse gas #emissions, which was more than the transport sector.
The report also highlighted the impacts of livestock on land use, water use, and #biodiversity loss.
