@paulthenerd well done for doing the best you can to plant-base your diet. I can’t advise on alternatives to butter that avoid palm oil as I don’t have any need to use them. I agree that #palmoil should be avoided. I’ve seen for myself the tropical forest destruction, habitat deprivation & mono-cropped deserts it can cause. However, the production of #dairy products has a range of #enviromental impacts too. Furthermore, it exploits & harms #sentient beings needlessly.

What Braverman is doing in talking about a 'hurricane' of refugees is obvious: she's trying to whip up hatred. But she's correct: the is going to create a wave of forced migration unprecedented in human history. What we on the left must do is to build a spirit in our communities which says, clearly, . If we sit on our hands, or fudge, the tide will sweep us away as it floods to the right.

@bioemerl @silence7 @empiricism methane emissions are over 80 times more potent than CO2 over 20 years. We haven’t got 100 years to constrain climate change to anything like safe levels. Given the rapid decay of methane, a full stop of emissions from animal agriculture by a worldwide cessation of meat, dairy and fish consumption would be a quick way to head off climate change. @silence7 @empiricism Research has also shown that cutting meat & dairy consumption worldwide would liberate an area of land equivalent to the whole of Africa. That land could be returned to nature and could absorb 16 years worth of global grewnhouse gas emissions.

@bioemerl @silence7 @empiricism dietary change is one of several steps that the @IPCC has identified as vital in containing #ClimateChange to safe(ish) levels but politicians are refusing to look at the huge herd of cows in the room. If humanity decarbonises every other aspect of economies but politicians continue to cowtow (sic) to the vested interests of animal agriculture, there will still be a #climateemergency.

@Bentley @mike @MichaelEMann we need both system-change & personal action given the danger humanity now faces. Arguing against personal action while the planet burns is irresponsible especially as personal action is one of the essential ingredients in bringing about system-change.

Still can’t get over the fact that an editor of the Financial Times said that we need to do away with #capitalism in order to deal with the #climate. If that’s not a sign of mainstream economics/finance finally waking up to the reality of the situation we’re in, I don’t now what is.

This is despite #meat , #dairy & other products of #animal exploitation accounting for around 30% of global #greenhousegas emissions when including the opportunity cost of misusing #land to feed farmed animals. An area equivalent to the whole of the African continent could be returned to nature, & therefore #carbon #sequestration , in a #vegan world

@simon_brooke @yogthos funny how this thread focuses on inaction by others. Whilst not wishing to let off politicians, airlines, oil and gas industries etc. , humanity could mitigate 16 years of greenhouse gas emissions just by switching to #plantbased diets. A solution to #ClimateChange is on your plate whilst vested interests dither. It’s also a way to protest that breaks no laws.
