Environmentally sustainable plant-based dishes in restaurants and cafes?
"Occasionally ordering a plant-based meal instead of a meat dish can greatly reduce the environmental footprint of the global food system. Animal agriculture accounts for 56% of food-related greenhouse gas emissions but produces only 18% of calories and 37% of protein."
"This means a family of four ordering plant-based meat burgers instead of beef patties saves carbon emissions equal to driving from Brisbane to the Gold Coast."
#BirdFlu Is Infecting More #Mammals. What Does That Mean for Us? #H5N1, #avianflu#virus, killed tens of thousands of #marinemammals, and infiltrated American #livestock for first time.
H5N1, one of the many viruses that cause bird flu, had already killed at least 24,000 South American sea lions along the coasts in less than a year. Now comes for elephant seals.
Scientists are working quickly to assess how it is evolving and risk it poses to humans #Maskup
"Financing for industrial #livestock is undermining U.S. banks’ #climate commitments and Bank of America, Citigroup, and JPMorgan Chase are responsible for over half of the $134 billion in financing, according to the latest research.
Lending to corporations involved in #meat, dairy, and/or feed production comprises only a tiny proportion of banks’ portfolios – at 0.25% - but represents a significant proportion of their financed #emissions, at around 11%."
#Scotland is an interesting laboratory for #rewilding, some under community ownership.
Tarras Valley has most of the ingredients I'd expect for carbon sinks preservation, including a focus on peatland restoration and a pragmatic decision to cut down mature commercial forests. They delayed action on the sheep farm side: I wonder how long that's sustainable. https://www.tarrasvalleynaturereserve.org/projects/
At least 2,250 herder families have lost more 70 percent of their #livestock, as this year’s #dzud blankets grazing lands in deep #snow and #ice and there are predictions many more animals will be unable to survive the next few weeks.
During #dzuds, temperatures in some parts of the country fall as low as minus 50 degrees Celsius (minus 58 Fahrenheit)
More than two million animals have died in Mongolia so far this winter, a government official said today, as the country endures extreme cold and snow... But this winter has been more severe than usual, with lower than normal temperatures and very heavy snowfall, the United Nations said in a recent report....
#birds#Poultry#Livestock#Rarebreeds One of the turkey breeds I have choosen its a UK heirloom breed on the rare breeds watch list.I used to have a hen turkey called Chrissy at my last place but when we were forced out of the house she went to a friend (for breeding not eating ) https://www.rbst.org.uk/pied-crollwitzer
They are good egg layers and quite small for turkeys so they need less space.Chrissy was very tame she would fly across the garden and perch on my shoulder
"Groups representing the #livestock industry, which is responsible for around 32% of global #methane emissions, want to increase their use of a new way of measuring these emissions that lets high polluters evade their responsibility to make big emissions cuts."
This is like having an overweight population and banning weighing scales.
"Written into a must-pass spending bill the House approved in November, the provision prevents the government from funding a law that requires big #livestock farms to report how much #methane their operations emit. Every spending bill Congress has passed in the last 14 years has contained similar disabling language."
Scientists and the general public have long dismissed the cognitive abilities of cows, pigs, and other livestock. But farm animals are capable of much more than we think.
#Africa’s #Hunger Crisis Deepens as War, Climate Pile on Pain
"The region of 1.2 billion people, which is home to many of the world’s poorest communities, suffered badly as food and fuel prices surged following Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Its farmers have also been battered by #ExtremeWeather events, including droughts and flooding linked to #ClimateChange, further pressuring prices by disrupting food supplies."
"#Food production is highly vulnerable to the effects of the #climate crisis, with research suggesting that as much as a third of global food could be at risk from global heating.
The targets include:
reducing #methane emissions from #livestock by 25%;
ensuring all the world’s #fisheries are sustainably managed;
safe and affordable drinking #water for all;
halving #FoodWaste;
eliminating the use of traditional biomass for cooking.
All by 2030.
The premise that #women exist in #America primarily to be #livestock, birthing and nurturing a steady supply of future workers to be tossed into our #economic grinders and be spit back out as #corporate#profit reports, appears to be growing again after years of being beaten back.
An Invasive Tick That Can Clone Itself Is Spreading Across the U.S., Threatening Livestock
Researchers documented three cows in Ohio killed by Asian longhorned ticks, which can lay up to 2,000 eggs without needing to mate
The ticks pose a serious threat to livestock, because they congregate in the thousands and can drain an entire animal of blood.
"For the first time there will be a dedicated food day, and #food, #agriculture and #water will be the focus of at least 22 major events during the fortnight of #COP28 talks in Dubai.
For the first time, too, the FAO will outline how food systems must change for the world to stay within the globally agreed goal of limiting temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels."
"71% of #food emissions in 2015 came from agriculture and “associated land use and land-use change activities” (#LULUC).The rest stemmed from retail, #transport, consumption, fuel production, #waste management, industrial processes and #packaging.
The study finds that CO2 accounts for roughly half of food-related emissions, while #methane (CH4) makes up 35% – mainly from #livestock production, farming and waste treatment."
