"For the first time there will be a dedicated food day, and #food, #agriculture and #water will be the focus of at least 22 major events during the fortnight of #COP28 talks in Dubai.

For the first time, too, the FAO will outline how food systems must change for the world to stay within the globally agreed goal of limiting temperature rises to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels."

Edit to add:
This is a #ClimateFoodFight thread

"At COP27 “Agribusiness and governments offered patented patches designed not to transform the food system, but to keep it the same.”

Campaigners hope for a real discussion of why the current western diet, being exported around the world to developing and middle-income countries, is inherently unsustainable, and what can be done about that."

This is like "EV EV EV!" and bike, walk, & transit infrastructure.
Both are needed but you only hear about one.

"Former officials in the #UN’s #farming wing have said they were censored, sabotaged, undermined and victimised for more than a decade after they wrote about the hugely damaging contribution of #methane emissions from #livestock to global heating.

Scientists also expressed concern about the way the #FAO’s estimate of livestock’s overall contribution to #emissions is continuing to fall.."
From 18% in 2006 to about 11.2% today. A 2021 study found it's 16.5% – 28.1%.

When scientists* give industry lies a veneer of credibility.

"A public statement signed by more than 1,000 scientists in support of #meat production and consumption has numerous links to the #LivestockIndustry.

The statement has been used to target top #EU officials against environmental and health policies and has been endorsed by the EU agriculture commissioner."

"Documents show industry intends to go ‘full force’ in arguing #meat is beneficial to the environment at #climate summit.

Meat and dairy companies are under increasing pressure over their large #GreenhouseGas footprints. The dairy industry is responsible for 3.4% of global human-induced #emissions, a higher share than aviation."

@CelloMomOnCars ignorance is strength.

Whose ignorance?

@CelloMomOnCars Orwell quote. The motto of the nation of Oceania in 1984:

War is Peace

Freedom is Slavery

Ignorance is Strength

@alberto_cottica

I got that but would like to know whose ignorance you're thinking of: the meat industry, the COP28 delegates, the general population?

alberto_cottica,
@alberto_cottica@mastodon.green avatar

@CelloMomOnCars the meat industry finds political strength in the ignorance (in modern terms, ample affordances for calling anything "green" and "sustainable") of us all. It's a bit more complicated than that, as "ignorance" is not a trait of individuals, but rather of the political and information landscape, but OK

Ah okay, thanks for explaining.

Why Big Ag is nervous:

"71% of #food emissions in 2015 came from agriculture and “associated land use and land-use change activities” (#LULUC).The rest stemmed from retail, #transport, consumption, fuel production, #waste management, industrial processes and #packaging.

The study finds that CO2 accounts for roughly half of food-related emissions, while #methane (CH4) makes up 35% – mainly from #livestock production, farming and waste treatment."

"Cutting back on #meat and eating more plant-based meals [are] a sure way to slash agricultural #emissions, but politically challenging.

Down another path lies the more politically palatable, yet far less effective, approach of continuing to eat record amounts of meat in the West while deploying a host of technologies and farming practices, each of which can only marginally shave off livestock emissions."

Guess which path is being pushed, hard.

"Hayek told the Guardian: “The #FAO’s errors were multiple, egregious, conceptual and all had the consequence of reducing the #emissions mitigation possibilities from dietary change far below what they should be. None of the mistakes had the opposite effect.”

Of more than 200 climate scientists surveyed for a recent paper, 78% said it was important for livestock herd sizes to peak by 2025 if the world was to stand a chance of preventing dangerous global heating."
