Massive invasive snakes are on the loose and spreading in Puerto Rico.

Vox reports: "Runaway pets — and possibly some zoo escapees — have fueled the spread of invasive snakes across the island. It’s an environmental catastrophe in the making."

@ai6yr this is literally happening because an Anime from late 70s called “Rascal the Raccoon” got people importing and keeping them as pets. #invasivespecies

This is so many levels of fucked up by government. They are selling invasive species to unaware citizens. This should be . The more spreads, the more this BC NDP govt will use that as justification to spray more over forests & more greenspaces!

FULL OUT, , GOVERNMENT .

You'd think there would be some kind of info on this, given that "cocaine hippos" imported by a drug lord are taking over the country of Colombia (and their fix is to try to sterilize them...) #hippos #invasivespecies #druglords https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/invasive-cocaine-hippos-are-being-sterilized-in-colombia/

The Callery pear tree is beloved for its white blooms – and they are beautiful – but it’s become one of the most problematic . Do you have one on your property? Horticulturists are urging you to get out your ax.

FYI: Almost all my meetings with concerned citizens, scientists & more - about #InvasiveSpecies was disappointing & felt like a huge waste of my time. We spent 4+ yrs, forced to just talk - when over 70% of us on consulting boards were pissed off because it was not our first time being asked/telling BC govt our findings & giving list of what needs to change immediately. They ignore our recommendations & create more consulting boards. It's so frustrating!

What can we do with some pest species? We can learn how to cook & eat them, instead of just killing & wasting actual real & helping with at the same time.

Don't be super grossed out about learning to cook & eat some invasive insects. Especially if you already eat several wild foods, eat your homegrown foods & eat meat or buy everything from stores.

Every single one of those foods has insects on or in them - in some form & invisible to our eyes.(1)

Hey Fedi!
I'm writing an argumentative essay about why cats should not be allowed outdoors unsupervised. If anyone of you have some cool papers relating to this I can read about and add, that'd be very helpful :D

It’s #QuokkaSelfie season again here in #WesternAustralia. Did you know that the only reason we have this amazing opportunity is due to the control of #FeralCats on #Wadjemup / #RottnestIsland? This successful #InvasiveSpecies control has provided a return of over $7M pa to WA tourism - that's the power of the #QuokkaSelfie!

On the impact of invasive parrots not in Barcelona but in the nearby river delta and its agriculture:

"An evaluation of monk parakeet damage to crops in the metropolitan area of Barcelona.—We evaluated damage to commercial crops caused by the monk parakeet, Myiopsitta monachus, in the Baix Llobregat agricultural area (1,024 ha) bordering the city of Barcelona, Spain. Average crop loss was 0.4% for tomatoes, 28% for corn, 9% for red plums, 36% for round plums, 37% for pears, 17% for persimmons, and 7% for quinces."
