Good news, everyone! The Yurok Tribe will now co-manage 125 acres of Redwood forest, a gateway to the state/national park, along with the National Park Service.

The tribal nation signed a memorandum of understanding Tuesday with Redwood national and state parks and the non-profit Save the Redwoods League.

NEW:
Valley Area has been ordered by the Ford govt to initiate a process to review all of their land holdings & determine all lands which could be sold to and subdivisions built. 😲

It's one of ’s most spectacular natural treasures; 1,200-hectares of lush Carolinian forests, meadows, streams, stunning geological formations, + array of rare plants, birds & wildlife.

I'm teaching a course and next week is , the idea that if you put something into a text, it should be there for a reason: plot, mood, character, world building, etc.

In the spirit of @allisonwyss, I'll point out, this is a tool not a rule, but what does this "rule" mean to you? Do you use it, subvert it, deconstruct it?

Are some #insects evolving in response to light pollution?

"We find a stark decline in blacklight trap efficacy over 25 years of monitoring in Delaware, USA, mirrored over 10 years of monitoring in New Jersey, USA. While the precise causes of this decline remain a subject for discussion, the practical consequences are clear: insect conservationists cannot fully rely on long-term trends from entomological light traps."

Decades of encouraging #recycling in the US have crowded out messaging on reducing the amount of plastics and non-recyclable waste.

Many consumers are confused about what can actually be recycled and the confusion allows corporations to avoid responsibility.

Consumers surveyed do recognize that the design phase is the best place to reduce waste.

Despite $246.9 million in taxpayer money, Forestry Corporation still lost $28 million
"The Nature Conservation Council of NSW has today released a new report from Frontier Economics which reveals for the first time that hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars have been gifted to the taxpayer owned logging business Forestry Corporation NSW over the past five years."

"The report finds the taxpayer-owned logging business received $246.9 million worth of grants since 2019/20 financial year, while the hardwood division (which is responsible for native forest logging) made a loss of $28.2 million over the same period"

"The NSW Government needs to come to terms with the fact that native forest logging is a dying industry and make a plan for a transition. How much more taxpayer money has to be wasted and endangered animals killed before this reality sinks in?" Statements attributable to NCC Chief Executive Officer Jacqui Mumford

Public native forest logging: a large and growing taxpayer burden, report
"The Nature Conservation Council of NSW (NCC) asked Frontier Economics to examine the financial and budgetary drivers behind the Victorian Government’s decision to accelerate the closure of its public native forest logging (NFL) – and how comparable these drivers are in New South Wales and Tasmania.
Poor financial performance and associated budgetary burdens associated with State run NFL operations are common across Australian jurisdictions. Taxpayers are bearing the cost burden of these risky and persistently loss-making government businesses."

Researchers pored over satellite imagery to create one of the most comprehensive data sets on the global mining footprint ever generated.

The data set maps out in fine detail the boundaries of a combined 65,585 km2 (25,323 mi2) of mining sites across the world.

Nearly 10% of the total mining areas mapped in the study fell inside protected areas like national parks, Ramsar wetlands and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Okay, so, on the one hand, I definitely understand what "we should tax water" sounds like.

But, on the other, we super need to tax water.

".A groundwater tax could be structured to mirror the environmental and societal costs of extraction. The adoption of such a policy would signal a shift from consumption to stewardship."

Just 3 years ago they were reintroduced to...
