I thought I was making a quick game about frogs and toads but actually I was enacting a psychological study on how people absolutely cannot deal with not having arbitrary performance metrics

American tech bros be like “Europe has no Google” and all I have to say to them is YOU have no Dutch Poultry Technology, the company that produces 80% of the world’s chicken processing machines. We will survive without choking on your fucking ads but will YOU survive whilst choking on fucking chicken bones? I THINK NOT

Yes another uni assignment has driven me insane why do you ask

The tooter accepts no liability for whatever y combinator accelerated LLM scam this spawns that proceeds to give the entirety of North America salmonella

Will you nerds (said endearingly) stop saying asml in my mentions, I do not know how I could have made it clearer that this is a shitpost than by addressing industrial scale chicken deboners as a Europe’s answer to Google

joenash,
@joenash@hachyderm.io avatar

@quixoticgeek this is the real reason the Netherlands CANNOT let ASML leave. We cannot afford to let go of chicken deboner market supremacy

@quixoticgeek I’m reading the webpage and one of these fowl boners can get through 4000 birds per hour

One day something I work on for @emf will not be the subject of a plea for help but today is not the day! Got access to a big laser cutter? Love games? Coming to EMF? Read on:

The EMF Arcade calls for aid! Do you know someone with a laser cutter (that can do 6mm plywood) who might want to help build an amazing arcade for indie and small game devs? We urgently need help getting our arcade cabinets cut, more details at https://blog.emfcamp.org/2024/05/17/help-the-EMF-arcade/

@joenash@hachyderm.io avatar

@ifixcoinops you’re all good, it’s a fair question :) we were originally offered help with this via a laser, so produced laser-suitable plans, and would like to avoid r&d’ing a new set of plans this close to the event! If someone has alternate production capabilities and the willingness to R&D the cab, I can get over the dimensions of the machines going inside and some requirements, but that feels like an even taller ask! @emf

New podcast over at Software Engineering Daily: I speak to Billy Basso about his solo-dev journey with Animal Well, and how he built the game, his own engine, and his own tools.

https://softwareengineeringdaily.com/2024/05/15/animal-well-with-billy-basso/

This game captured me totally, I was not prepared and it's consumed the last couple of weeks. Cannot recommend it enough, but don't take my word for it: there's no better sign of the love in the game than Billy's super in depth explanation of his scanline effect in the early minutes of the show

Good news: I must have successfully spooked the mice out of the nest they made under my garden tiles.

Bad news: I think this because I have just disturbed a bumblebee nest that has seemingly occupied the space by moving a tile 😭 I had only moved it a little when sad bumblebees came swarming out, so I’m hoping I’ve not caused too much damage.

It’s time for everyone’s favourite toot segment: excellent titles in wildlife research papers!

The new belt-holder has to be:

“Shit Happens (to be Useful)! Use of Elephant Dung as Habitat by Amphibians” by Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz

Hello fediverse, lil cry for help: I’m looking to speak to someone with vitelliform macular dystrophy caused vision loss, so I can ask about their experience with the onset of symptoms. I was diagnosed ~3 years ago and until recently hadn’t experienced symptoms, I believe I now am but would love to chat to others about their experiences. Compulsory masto disclaimer: I’m not looking for advice other than the specific ask above, thank you. Boosts much appreciated 💖

Not to be a dick when I’m asking for help but if you’re going to reply to suggest I add a hashtag, please a) suggest a hashtag that has any toots on it whatsoever and b) has anything to do with the condition in question.

joenash,
@joenash@hachyderm.io avatar

@j_g_fitzgerald as far as I can see (from the Big Hashtag Search), there are no posts on that hashtag. Are you seeing otherwise?

joenash,

@j_g_fitzgerald right, thanks, that’s not what I’m looking for. Please kindly stop suggesting it

The tech industry really has sucked the joy out of and pumped fear into some of the funnest aspects of applying the craft of programming. I’ve been helping some friends caught in layoffs stay tech-interview ready by working through kata-ish coding tasks with them. They’ve been so trained to expect a trick or trap and it makes the experience so adversarial when it could be joyful.

joenash,
@joenash@hachyderm.io avatar

@villares thanks for the suggestion! I’ve tried it with these folks before, they’re close friends, and I do a lot of recreational programming, some CC adjacent, but haven’t ever been able to engage them with it. They’re only really interested if it’s something very related to their work. The good news is they both got new jobs so for now they won’t have to keep facing this fear!
