The tech industry really has sucked the joy out of and pumped fear into some of the funnest aspects of applying the craft of programming. I’ve been helping some friends caught in layoffs stay tech-interview ready by working through kata-ish coding tasks with them. They’ve been so trained to expect a trick or trap and it makes the experience so adversarial when it could be joyful.

@joenash maybe show them "creative coding" mostly unrelated to work/corporate coding. Which programming language are you into? I could send some pointers...
I like Python, but there a people using Java, Kotlin, JS, C++, C, etc.

@villares thanks for the suggestion! I’ve tried it with these folks before, they’re close friends, and I do a lot of recreational programming, some CC adjacent, but haven’t ever been able to engage them with it. They’re only really interested if it’s something very related to their work. The good news is they both got new jobs so for now they won’t have to keep facing this fear!

@joenash good to know they are well. Your toot's introduction about the tech industry sucking the joy out of programming struck a chord!
