Happiness. I can now reveal that I was stupid and left my iPad in the bus from Toledo to Madrid two weeks ago (on a Saturday). I followed it in Find My and saw that it returned to Toledo and stayed there. I went there the following day, but of course the ticket office wasn’t open on Sundays and even if I saw it was some metres away I couldn’t get it... I eventually got a reply from that they do have it there and I can fetch it on a weekday so here I am now and yes I got it back. Whew.

If was really clever, it would notice that you are in bus/train/etc and ping your nearby devices/ items frequently once you stop, to be able to tell you right away “dude, you left your iPad/hat/bag in the bus, go back now and fetch it”.

Hey , feel free to implement this.

It did tell me now that I left the iPad, but too late. We were already hundreds of metres away, in the metro station, and it took like five minutes to go back and by that time the bus had already left.

Judge denies Apple's attempt to dismiss a class-action lawsuit over AirTag stalking

> A judge has denied Apple's motion to dismiss a class-action lawsuit claiming that stalkers are using its AirTag devices to track victims — and that the tech giant hasn't done enough to prevent them.

Can’t connect an AirTag to your iPhone, especially if that AirTag isn’t brand new or has had a battery replaced?

Take out the battery from the AirTag and put it back in. You should hear a chirp do this for more times for total of five times. That resets the AirTag. In my case, my #iPhone was able to then pick up the #AirTag and connect to it.

Another parent at school had an #Airtag placed on their car by an unknown (the intent of the person who did that is unclear).
Often heard/read about the "abusive partner/stalker" but this felt different (more like a car tagging ahead of robbery).

Anyway message was displayed on that dad's iphone last night but not this morning. They think the tracker might have been removed also I thought it might have been awake due to car movement and might have been sleeping this morning

Verkehrte Welt.

Cool #iPhone and #AirTag thing I learned the other day - An AirTag can act like an NFC chip (I guess it is one, plus some fancy packaging). So I wrote an automation that starts recording a walking workout when I tap the AirTag on my non-car-keyring (the one I bring on walks), and pauses it when I tap again on return to the house. Seemed to work okay - I've added some notifications to indicate that the workout app (Footpath, in this case) is actually paused, as it wasn't obvious.

One thing is kind of glitchy - The scan quality is strongly affected by the presence of metal, in this case the keyring itself. So it's a little awkward to scan. I have to keep the rest of the keyring as far as possible from the phone while I'm tapping or it won't register.

I’m looking at AirTags and I have a question. They have a nice privacy feature built in where if there is someone else’s #AirTag following you it will notify you and play a sound. But if I put one in my car or on my bike and it gets stolen, won’t the thief then be notified that they’re being tracked? And then they just throw away the AirTag rendering it completely useless for tracking the thief? I’m seeing conflicting info online about how long it takes for an AirTag to notify other people or play a sound.

I get that it has to be balanced with the potential for harm from stalking. Just wondering if the tech would be useful for my use case (stolen car/bike).

#Apple #AirTag #Surveillance: "The type of smartphone you own affects how easily you can discover hidden AirTags. Owners of iPhones running iOS 14.5 or newer should receive a push alert whenever an unknown AirTag is nearby for an extended period of time and away from its owner. Apple’s website does not provide an exact time frame for when this alert is triggered.

When you click on the iPhone alert, you may be given the option to play a sound on the AirTag to help locate the device. Check that you will receive these alerts by going into the Find My app, choose the Me tab in the bottom-right corner, and make sure Item Safety Alerts is green and toggled to the right under Notifications.

Months after the release of the AirTag, Apple launched the Tracker Detect app for Android phones. Unlike the security features available for the iPhone, the Android app does not automatically look for unknown AirTags. Users must initiate the scan."
