thefreehunter,

I’m looking at AirTags and I have a question. They have a nice privacy feature built in where if there is someone else’s following you it will notify you and play a sound. But if I put one in my car or on my bike and it gets stolen, won’t the thief then be notified that they’re being tracked? And then they just throw away the AirTag rendering it completely useless for tracking the thief? I’m seeing conflicting info online about how long it takes for an AirTag to notify other people or play a sound.

I get that it has to be balanced with the potential for harm from stalking. Just wondering if the tech would be useful for my use case (stolen car/bike).

melona,

@thefreehunter Yes you‘re right, but only if the thief happens to have an iPhone as well and chances are they won‘t hear it. The sound is really quiet overall and I have mine hidden in my bell which covers the sound even more. My husband‘s iPhone has triggered the alarm in the past and in a noisy area there‘s no way anyone would notice it.

My airtag actually helped me get my stolen bike back today, so I will always vote for at least trying.

drsbaitso,

@thefreehunter Your overall thrust is correct. Apple changed the alert time after the release, so that's probably why you're seeing conflicting info on exactly how long.

The idea is a car or a bike is that you can hide the Airtag somewhere that the thief can't find. Granted that's much easier on a car, but there are places on a bike like in the seat tube. There are also plenty of hardy mounting options like TagVaults that offer more protection (and a little bit of noise suppression) so you could attach it underneath the car, for example.

You know the thing you want to track better than most thieves will, so use that to your advantage.
