: "The type of smartphone you own affects how easily you can discover hidden AirTags. Owners of iPhones running iOS 14.5 or newer should receive a push alert whenever an unknown AirTag is nearby for an extended period of time and away from its owner. Apple’s website does not provide an exact time frame for when this alert is triggered.

When you click on the iPhone alert, you may be given the option to play a sound on the AirTag to help locate the device. Check that you will receive these alerts by going into the Find My app, choose the Me tab in the bottom-right corner, and make sure Item Safety Alerts is green and toggled to the right under Notifications.

Months after the release of the AirTag, Apple launched the Tracker Detect app for Android phones. Unlike the security features available for the iPhone, the Android app does not automatically look for unknown AirTags. Users must initiate the scan."

Just picked up a 4-pack of AirTags for $88 on Amazon.

Gonna hide one in my car, one in my backpack.

A link to Apple’s official setup page:

Partnering with Velotric to road test their new cargo bike and this thing HAULS! Like, literally. It's not just quick, it actually hauls a lot of gear.

The Find My backpack is now available! While this is interesting, pretty cool, and sets the stage for more Find My integrated products, I have one question….

Why not just put an AirTag in your current backpack?

Question!
Google recently announced they were making a device tracking service like AirTags, and that other brands like Pebblebee and Chipolo would make supporting hardware.
There was mention of Tile also supporting it, but since the announcement I haven't seen any actual confirmation that Tile is on board.
Has anyone seen a follow up or reached out to Tile?
I really want to test some of these trackers, and I have some older but still current Tiles to play with too.

Something must be in the water, because I just got ANOTHER flare up of people asking me about Faraday bags to prevent phone tracking.

Short answer: A Faraday bag probably doesn't solve your problem; they require great care to use effectively. and your phone can be tracked as soon as you remove it.

But if you DO need one, you want one that actually works. Here's a short writeup I did a while back on the theory and practice of testing them:

https://www.mattblaze.org/blog/faraday/

TL;DR: Science is fun.

SpyBlog,

@mattblaze

What if the "tracking device attached to the bumper" is not a powerful cell phone transmitter (with an obviously limited battery life, unless somehow wired in to the vehicle's electrical system ) but a low powered Apple #AirTag ?

This might track the vehicle for months, relying on the network of millions IPhones to keep track of it cooperatively ?

How much foil etc. is needed to isolate an AirTag ?

SpyBlog,

@mattblaze

Does an Apple #Airtag rely primarily on #Bluetooth to periodically beacon its unique identifiers or does it also passively transmit on the shorter range but harder to jam, multi frequency, #UltraWideBand ?

Or does it only do so in response to an iPhone initiated Find Me active scanning request ?

Companies welcome input from industry participants and advocacy groups on a draft specification to alert users in the event of suspected unwanted tracking

> Location-tracking devices help users find personal items like their keys, purse, luggage, and more through crowdsourced finding networks. However, they can also be misused for unwanted tracking of individuals.

> It’s impossible to say how many people are affected by AirTag stalking, let alone how many of them are put at additional risk simply because they own an Android phone. But one victim is one too many, and measures need to be in place to ensure these kinds of products are much, much harder to exploit.

For now, the best Android option is AirGuard by @seemoo from the Play store or @fdroidorg:
