I see it's International Women's Day!

I think it's pretty likely I was the first woman to start a podcasting network back in 2006, and we're still going strong today. So do me a favor and check out a Quick and Dirty Tips podcast this weekend.

@grammargirl I've been a writer and a grammar nerd for decades but only recently discovered your wonderful podcast! I am working up the courage to leave a VM, too. Thank you.

@drahardja @sgt1372 The article cites someone who says failed tired are a maintenance issue, not a manufacturing one.

I feel extra lucky about the United flight I was on two weeks ago now. Over the Pacific ocean. At night. And it was a 737max!

Without looking it up, tell me anything you know about Lithuania or Lithuanians.

vincent,
@vincent@mastodon.coffee avatar

@RickiTarr In the 80s in Vilnius, families and husbands weren't allowed to be in the maternity ward. Family members were expected to be quiet around the mother and newborn. And the nursery was to have its shades drawn at all times.

I was in a birthing class with the daughter of a Lithuanian immigrant. She had talked to her mother about the differences in their maternity experiences and shared these interesting tidbits with the rest of the class.

I’ve been building my new website in #11ty, and it’s the first time a static site generator has really clicked for me. I’ve been using different ones forever and they were always confounding in some way.

One of the nice things about moving from another SSG is how your archives are just.. files.

After a few days of tinkering, I think I’m happy with the structure, and will next spend some time figuring out design and accessibility elements.

The tree on the powerlines at the end of the road has been cleared away. But right after I put my lunch in the car the took 5 steps back to the house, a huge branch landed on the car roof! It left a small dent on the top. O-O

Kinloss and Kinross: two completely different places, miles and miles apart.

Yet, whenever I read about one or the other I have to think really hard about where they are located.

Do you have places you sometimes confuse?

vincent,
@vincent@mastodon.coffee avatar

@fitheach We have cities near where I live that share a name with really famous cities.
Dublin
Newark
Menlo Park
Richmond
San José (this one might be bigger than the capital of Costa Rica, tho)
Monterey (NOT Monterrey)
Concord
Albany

If you mention the more famous city in conversation, you have to specify it. Otherwise, locals will assume you're talking about the Bay Area city.

    I will miss YouTube terribly when its inevitable enshittification renders it useless. Today YouTube helped me fixed the window regulator on our Fiat 500e, which nobody on Kaua'i would touch for under $500. Cost to me: $28.

    https://youtu.be/Cne7FG7IDB0 shows how to fix the part with the $18 repair kit.

    https://youtu.be/ZTyt92RAazM shows how to get the part out and put it back in.

    https://youtu.be/-p-nNwjcQDc shows how to replace the $9 clip that causes the part to break in the first place.

    Okay I'm going to describe something, that I'm thinking that some other people have too:

    So, when I'm feeling very sad, emotional, and overwhelmed, and I just feel like I can't keep going. I have this sort of other hyper rational part of myself. I call it Outside Man, mostly because it feels like it hovers over the top of my ocean of my emotions, and can see things from outside of where I am. Outside Man is the one who tells me that emotions change and this intensity of feeling won't last forever, and I need to do the things I know will help my mental state.

    Is this or something like this, something other people experience?

    And yes, I know that it's probably inherently sexist that I call what I consider my more rational self by a male moniker, but I've called it that since I was a kid, and it's stuck. Hubs said Outside Man sounds like a horror movie!

    vincent,
    @vincent@mastodon.coffee avatar

    @RickiTarr While not quite Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, it sounds like you developed a coping mechanism that organically mimics it.

    And I'm so glad it works for you!

    I use CBT myself, as I have no Outside Man. Instead I have Inner Imp, and he must be told off from time to time.

It got a ton of comments about buying knives and learning how to use them and either OP self deleted or it got modded but it’s gone. So I wanted to reshare my advice if you’re in the same boat and knives are intimidating and you don’t know where to start 🧵

    Well the interesting thing about 2024 is going to be when American liberals say ‘fuck it I’m going to move to Europe’ you know for sure that they just mean ‘I don’t want to deal with my own fascism’

    vincent,
    @vincent@mastodon.coffee avatar

    @skinnylatte We must deal with our fascism. And for nearly everyone, emigrating to Europe isn't an option due to jobs and language. Even if someone managed it, they'd hate British and French fascists even more than our own, I think.

    I was involved in a short discussion about hair ice. It surprised me that other people, in Scotland, had never seen hair ice. For me, it is a very common sight.

    To see hair ice one needs frosty conditions, suitable wood (deciduous branches are good, particularly beech), and, crucially, the presence of Exidiopsis effusa. Currently, I have an abundance of all three elements.

    To-day, I found several examples, after a quick search. The attached photo was the best.

    vincent,
    @vincent@mastodon.coffee avatar

    @fitheach Welp, now I'm going to be looking up how it forms.

    I've never seen it, but I live in a part of the world that seldom freezes but will be on the lookout for it when I visit the snow.

    vincent,
    @vincent@mastodon.coffee avatar

    @fitheach So I was looking to see if I had a chance to see it near me, but the nearest area with snow is at 39°N. I'd have to travel all the way to Portland, OR to just get inside the southernmost hairice band.

    That said. Aren't the highlands of Scotland farther norther than 55°N (by a hair)? Forgive my ignorance of Scottish geography if I got this totally wrong.

    Last night, my husband asked me to look at something that felt weird on his back, and honestly, it looked like a cancerous mole. I told him he needed to go to the doctor this morning, so he did. The Nurse Practitioner said, Yep, that looks gnarly, and took a biopsy. Now we have to wait for a week, which feels way too long. I know basal cell carcinomas are very treatable, and almost never lead to death, but I still feel anxious. Has anyone else dealt with this before?

    vincent,
    @vincent@mastodon.coffee avatar

    @RickiTarr Not personally (yet). My father has dealt with it, though. He had both carcinoma and melanoma. Both successfully treated.

    For your husband, I hope it's benign. Sending good thoughts your way.
