I cannot date this, but apparently some time in the distant past (possibly 80’s?) the International Harvester tractor company used punch cards for inventory and parts ordering.

TFW your spouse's iMac has 20Mb(!) free out of 2Tb because they tried to use Adobe Cloud for something and now all attempts to reboot keep hanging (filesystem is okay, though) so the next step is to try for Target Disk mode and a cable to a laptop in order to delete cached junk and logfiles until it will boot enough for them to clean up properly …

UNIXen have never been great about coping with full disks/SSDs, but this is a new nadir, and fuck you very much, Adobe Creative Suite.

lemay,
@lemay@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross I had an older mac in which i ran adobe cloud for all of a month (to touch up one file in illustrator) and I could not get rid of it. I uninstalled it and it was still there. I deleted all the files including the sneaky ones and they all came back. Occasionally it would go nuts and eat the disk or all the memory. I ended up having to wipe the whole machine to get rid of it. I used illustrator for 30 years. Never ever, ever ever ever again.

Iris season! Bearded irises tubers seem expensive when you first buy them but then they just keep growing and growing and multiplying and five years later you have way more than you wanted and you're giving them away on street corners. A+ garden investment.

I bought these white ones before I knew what a "rebloomer" iris was so they flower only once a year for a week or so, but it's a really nice week.

Interesting, the alcohol content in the hard cider served at La Crêperie de Paris at Epcot is only 3%. Going to brew up a batch of some kind of hard cider here today, probably, and all the recipes seem to be double that. #alcohol #brewing #homebrew

lemay,
@lemay@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr French cider uses tart and bittersharp apples grown for specifically cider. All we get in the US are dessert apples, with much higher sugar to start with, so higher alcohol in the final product.

Floret did a whole thing on ducks recently and it was 100% duck propaganda. I was so close to ordering a box of ducklings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tmo93DLU4DU

A Tesla narrowly avoided flattening me in an intersection again as I was walking across the street early this morning, which is kind of common. 🙄

Except this one was making an illegal U-turn through a red light before they nearly flattened me. 🙄 🙄

@cstross I dreamed last night that you and I got together to save the world by trapping an angry elder god in an old NeXT machine. You thought the NeXT machine was too expensive but I volunteered to pay for it given the whole saving the world thing.

We thought we had trapped the elder god and all was well but then it turned out said elder god freed itself by oozing out in the spaces between the strands of the ethernet cable.

You died messily as I ran away. Sorry about that.

We saw this beautiful 50's Nash yesterday parked in front of the hardware store, and stopped to gawk. The rear badge said “Nash Cooper" and we were all 🤔 no such thing?

Then we looked inside. It is actually a modern Mini Cooper with a vintage Nash shell. But SO well done, the entire interior had been painted and upholstered in the same mustard color as the outside. A near-perfect retro-mod.

Googling turned up this (too short) description: https://poeschloncars.blogspot.com/2017/06/your-grandpas-nash-re-imagined-nash.html

The rear end of a vintage 50’s Nash car in a two-toned mustard color with a white roof and a small roof rack filed with vintage suitcases. It’s parked on the side of a suburban street.

Me, reading on the internet: Cats don't like peppermint, so you can put peppermint essential oil on stuff to keep cats away from it.
Me, the next day: (applies peppermint essential oil to the doorway where Minna screams for no reason half the night)
Minna: (approaches the doorway while I'm standing there, sniffs the peppermint bottle, takes a big lick.)

LOL The other "wrong key" story for me was in 2018 or 2019, when I ended up driving to a motel along old Route 66 and got room "6", took a shower, and collapsed in bed exhausted. A couple of hours later I was woken up by someone who ALSO had the key to room "6" and it ended up I had actually checked into "Room 9" but the key also worked for "Room 6". We just traded keys (not that we needed to, LOL).

@ai6yr Many years ago we had a fancy lockable mailbox that someone took a crowbar to and destroyed the lock. The mailbox was otherwise in fine shape so we managed to fabricate anti-crowbar reinforcements and replaced the lock with a new one I got from the local ace hardware.

Some years later a truck ran over the mailbox, and we got a new one. The old key for the ace hardware cabinet lock worked in the new mailbox. I'm still astonished about it.

Oxalis is underrated as a landscaping plant! The bees love it. Edible (in small quantities... though probably wouldn't eat these, the dog also likes marking it, ha ha)

lemay,
@lemay@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr The difficulty with oxalis as a landscape plant is that after a few years all you will have is oxalis. Stuff grows everywhere. Stuff grows on concrete. Can't stop it. Can't kill it, short of herbicides.

One of the sure signs we've seen of climate change where we are is that it used to get cold enough in the winters to knock back the oxalis. That doesn't really happen any more. Hate the stuff.

Lies my Cats Tell Me

I'm so hungry.
No, I have not been fed yet.
If you do not feed me right now, I will DIE.
I did not know standing on your bits would hurt.
I did not know that was your food.
I did not know your foot was under there.
I can't hear you yelling.
I never touched her.
It wasn't me.
I'll never do it again.
OK, I did it, but! look how cute I am!

These are my cancer daffodils. I bought a bulk-pack of bulbs (“Ice Follies”) in September of 2022, and then I promptly got a cancer diagnosis.

By the time I was done with treatment and had enough energy for gardening it was March 2023. Many of the bulbs were dry and dead, but I planted the rest of them because I figured I had nothing to lose.

That spring they came up but did not flower, but this year they are doing just fine. Just like me. 😊

I cannot express enough how much promise this grinder from KitchenAid had in 2004, and how much of a disappointment it was.

ALL KitchenAid had to do was put a good burrset inside, and reduce the static problems. But they did neither. They used a pressed-metal burrset.

It had almost everything we like in grinders today: direct down path, auger, powerful motor, all metal construction, the works.

Let down by the burr set (mostly) and the lack of any kind of anti-static system (a bit).

So sad.

cc @coffee

lemay,
@lemay@mastodon.social avatar

@coffeegeek @coffee I still have one of these I bought new (my husband uses it for moka-pot decaf; I have another grinder for espresso). For a while there was a community-made adapter for mazzer burrs, but I neglected to buy it and now it is no longer available. ☹️

Last time I went looking for even the pressed burrs they were hard to find. I bought three sets which should last me a few more years. It is a really beautifully designed appliance and it should have been so much better.
