In addition to blooming profusely my indoor African violet plant has sprouted a green fuzzy something in the middle of one of the blossoms. . . Does anyone know what it is? Or if I should do anything about it other than see what happens next? Thanks.

@sallymack @houseplants It's a seed pod! In theory you can let it dry and harvest the seeds and plant them and get a new variety. (I have never tried that because I am really good at ending up with way too many African violets just from leaf propagation)

@sallymack @houseplants You can leave the seed pod alone, it's not doing any harm. Just remove the flower when it dies like you normally would.

If you have more than one kind of african violet they can cross-pollinate, so if you grew out the seeds the new plant will be a combination of the parents. If you just have the one I don't know if the seeds will even be viable but you’d (in theory) get a new plant of the same kind. (leaf propagation is easer)

🧵 1/ I finished this project this week! Look at it!!

You are probably thinking "uhhh ok that is a 20 year old Weber gas grill?" It is!! I got it from a neighbor for free during the pandemic, and I've been working on it on-and-off ever since. It was in good shape for its age, mostly because it had never been cleaned. 😬 Turns out a really thick layer of pork grease does a good job at preventing rust. 😬 😬

Other than the grease it still worked fine as a grill, but I had bigger plans.

I have a big plant tray for a bird bath/wildlife waterer out in the yard. I put a little solar fountain in it this week and it's much prettier than I expected it to be. (hummingbirds, especially, like it a lot)

I made it a little too vinegary but there are three jars of it so it will hold me over for a little while.

Max (cat) is at the vet hospital today. Over the weekend he developed a big abscess on his jaw and he's been completely miserable ever since. Neither the emergency vet nor his regular vet would hazard a guess as to the cause and he didn't want anyone touching him, so today they will put him under and to get to the bottom of it.

My poor tabby boy. 😭

🧵 1/ Every once in a while when I open the back door Minna manages to zip past me and Get Out. Fortunately when she Gets Out she doesn't make a break for the woods, she just stands there just out of reach and screams her head off. I can pretty clearly understand that she is yelling “HA HAAA I AM OUT.” Big Mr Jiggles Is Loose In The Cat Room energy.

🧵 2/ Yesterday Minna Got Out, but when she ran behind the gas grill to scream her head off at me, she flushed a fence-post lizard out from under it, which zipped at full speed all the way across the patio and headed for the air conditioner.

I have never seen Minna move so fast. The lizard got away but WOW smol round lazy void cat can totally be SPEEDY PREDATOR YARD PANTHER when she really wants to be.

Hey @gardening @plants are these two plants both culinary #ginger?
I remember planting ginger around there a couple of times, and digging up and reburying a couple of unfortunate rhizomes several times. But that bed also had potatoes a couple of years ago. Is the purple flower a variant of the white flower ginger? What do we think?

A plant with purple flowers is blooming through s chicken wire cage. This plant has stems, leaves, and flowers that are very similar in shape to the white flowers plant, but the colors are quite different. These leaves are purplish with yellow around the edges, and of course the flowers are purple.

DEAR HOT SAUCE/FOOD MASTODON (foodstodon?): Actual Huy Fong rooster-label Sriracha is completely unobtainable this year (chile shortage due to drought, climate change is also coming for your hot sauce). Are there any alternate srirachas that are an OK substitute to fill the gap?

We are well-stocked for mexican-style and cajun-style hot sauces, it's the rooster sauce we can't replace, and we are running low. Also looking for a sambal olek.

Like many other people in #gardening, this is the time of the year to dig up all the garlic. Due to ordering and planting mishaps my garlic is smaller and much less pretty than a lot of other people’s garlic harvests, but it is still plenty of garlic for me. Also no trouble with rust or white rot this year, which had been so bad in past years it had very nearly sworn me off growing garlic altogether. Big success! 🧅
