I think I found the first Disability dongle made by Disabled people. This Glide has a subscription and this deposit doesn’t mean that you are pre-ordering it. Naturally, I’m not ordering one but here it is if you want to explore https://glidance.io/deposit/ #Disability #DisabilityDongle #Tech

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@weirdwriter huh. Yeah, I've been watching that project. I've even met the founder, used to work at Microsoft. I like the idea of it, but then, I've also heard that during CSUN, they were touting a prototype that was actually being controlled by a dude with a remote, their FAQ used to state that the device shouldn't cost " more than a smartPhone package", and now we have this deposit scheme ... it all sounds great, but it is starting to look awfully sketchy

THe interesting thing about working remote for primarily non-DUtch companies; you totally forget about your own national holidays. It took me until now to realize the Netherlands has a day off today :P

Oh cool. Just got the "We've got an update for you" dialog from Windows... with three unlabelled buttons and no ability to close with alt+f4. Good to see that continued commitment to accessibility right there in a highly visible part of the OS. They must all be busy with that pivot to AI.
The buttons don't appear to have any text on them or at least none that OCR can pick up. I thought I'd check the UIA AutomationId just in case that revealed anything useful. The buttons do have different AutomationIds... of "Button2", "Button1" and "Button0", in that order.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

But ... but but ... it's . Their commitment to is beyond reproach! It's what all the articles say and everything. ...Except no, not really, it's been a mess for years and it saddens me

@nathanhoad Sounds good. Was considered?

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@nathanhoad excellent :) Do keep in mind that for a lot of these, things like game engine choice, code architecture etc. can really help or hinder you there. We generally recommend to keep these things in mind from as early as hoomanly possible. e.g., interfacing with screen readers is either easy orh ard depending on programming language, text is easier to work with than images of text, etc.
Happy to chat some time if you like. Disclaimer: FUlly blind gamer/streamer with a developer background

Amazing work once again from Apple's #Accessibility team! I'm particularly stoked about Music Haptics where "the Taptic Engine in iPhone plays taps, textures, and refined vibrations to the audio of the music" - SO cool and important to bring music to everyone!

I'd actually love to hear from actual #deaf or #hardOfHearing folks about what they think of this. It kinda looks gimmicky in a " who asked for this?" kind of way to me, but I'm a #blind person. I don't know if people have been looking for this but I'd really love to learn more :)

According to today's announcement from Be My Eyes, their Be My AI service is now utilizing the new GPT-4O model for all users. Additionally, they mentioned that audio and video capabilities are forthcoming, as the API required to enable those functions is not yet available for their use.

zersiax,

@Thomas_domville here's an interesting thought: If those APIs aren't available yet, how did they make that demo video? ...

Question to #ScreenReader, #LowVision, #blind & #accessibility folks:

How do you feel about duplicate links in articles, blogs, whatever? Meaning: A certain word is a link (let's say "HEALTH") leading to an external website.

Would it annoy you if this word was always a link and it's mentioned for example 20 times in an article? Or would you rather have it only once to make it easier to scan for links?

Is there a related #wcag success criteria?

#WebDev #a11y #disability #frontend

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@stvfrnzl Even without the screen reader angle you'd add a huge amount of extra tabstops if you add the same link 20 times, which is pretty annoying for keyboard users alone. Screen reader users have more tools to dodge around that but if you are navigating by link, particularly on mobile, I'd feel that got pretty annoying as well. I'd limit to 3 at the very most

I've never used signal or Telegram. the accessibility of both is appalling.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@KaraLG84 Actually Signal's pretty good. Telegram's fine on anything that isn't iPhones, albeit with third-party apps at times :)

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@menelion @KaraLG84 it was worse couple years back. I tried it again last year and at least the core chatting experience worked ...fine. Maybe it got worse again though, I dunno. I always get a little itchy when people equate accessible with easy-to-use, though. Like ... some people would call MS Teams inacssible. It isn't, for the most part. It's inconvenient as all hell, feels like swimming through quicksand, but the accessibility's fine-ish. Its just bad for everyone :)

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@menelion @KaraLG84 I wouldn't really go that far either, though, at least with NVDA. If you learn the hotkeys, its ...doable-ish, apart from the odd tab order inconsistency. I use it for work ... I don't like it, but I can use it well enough. I really only need to use the chat and calendar tabs though, but even when I had to use the Teams stuff it was ...clunky, but doable. I think people have a bit of a trigger-finger on calling something impossible to use, going as far as grabbing another person to do things for them instead of, say, learning how OCR works and enabling themselves. But thats a rant for another day.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@svenja @menelion @KaraLG84 what's "not good" about it? I'm curious

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@svenja @menelion @KaraLG84 haha that last one I remember, almost like somebody tried to make the chats autoRead when new messages come in, but they did the aria-live wrong. The scrolling issue sounds like quickly hopping into browse mode would fix? Certainly not ideal but that's kinda my point. A lot of stuff is far from ideal. If we like it or not, the days of people writing win32 apps that follow all keyboard conventions are unfortunately mostly gone and it's all kinda meh now. Even Windows 11's own apps aren't great without using things like object navigation and OCR sometimes. That is regrettable, but I think I see a lot of people who yell the loudest about things being inaccessible cling to that kind of UI and outside of the occasional blind community app people just don't use those widgets much anymore. It's all QT, or Electron, or whatever Windows calls their new UI this week now :)

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@svenja @menelion @KaraLG84 lol yeah, I will admit that I need to (re)learn JAWS better. I find that JAWS has everything documented, but it can be a bit of a chore finding the right guidance sometimes

Another db question! I'm using migration files whenever I make a change to the db. When I'm doing dev, whats a good source of truth for the current structure of the tables (column names, types and so on)? I could app switch to my db admin app but I'd prefer a quick way to reference inside VS Code

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@KaraLG84 as far as languages go those aren't the easiest to pick up :) pronunciation aside they have a lot of gnarly grammar that English doesn't have which can make it challenging. Very interesting and horizon-widening ... but challenging

superblindman, to random
@superblindman@peoplemaking.games avatar

Well, as I am making steady progress in Hades 2, I think I can safely say that it has the exact same potential as the first game did. It's playable with the same kaviats, (you don't know what door you're entering, you might be wandering for a bit and so on), and it will likely be moddable in much the same way. Like seriously, the mods could function the same as they do for the first game, modified specifically for the new types of things they would now have to look for. As I understand it, work on this has already begun.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@superblindman it has, in factt, begun. Am just about to stream what's currently possible but yeah, even without mods that was my impression, as well

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@ysotomayor @superblindman very, very rudimentary screenreader access has been achieved, its just that mods need to make use of it now

Hey if Sonos can just up and screw their UI then I can just up and decide to never use them for future speakers. Time to check the resale value of this garbage in case they can't fix the UI accessibility like yesterday.

zersiax,
@zersiax@cupoftea.social avatar

@talon actually curious, do we have a convenient alternative? Tried Google Home Maxes and the CHromecast protocol seems to be pretty prone to stutters/dropouts. Sonos does this better, but not familiar with other solutions and their accessibility, pretty much refuse to even consider HomePod or whatever the newest iteration of that is called these days
