My "day job" is working at the Flickr Foundation helping nurture and grow Flickr Commons. We're approaching an important milestone, re-opening the doors to Flickr Commons, a collection of photography collections all of which have no known copyright restrictions.

It's been around since 2008 and is comprised of nearly two million photos. Do you work for a GLAM institution that might want to be part of it? If so, please read our main post and send us your details. 🤩

i've been adding a lot of "rules" to my posts on here about what kind of replies I want ("no starting arguments!” "no explaining what a git commit is!”)

Here's a thread about why! Some of my goals are:

  1. have nuanced discussions & stay on topic
  2. hear from a diverse set of people
  3. learn new things about how people use computers

let’s talk about each of them!

It's been 21 years and 29 days since Tor Books published my first novel, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom. In the years since, Tor has published every one of my novels, sending me around the USA and Canada to talk about them. Now, they've teamed up with @humblebundles to sell 18 of my ebooks on a name-your-price basis, with part of the proceeds going to benefit @eff:

The older I get, the more reminders I get on my devices that are just ghosts of recurring things that no longer exist but I can never somehow seem to entirely remove.

I'm convinced that if I lived long enough, dismissing those notifications would just be my whole life.

It is kinda mindblowing how much developer support Apple has for its XR headset on day one. Microsoft could spend ten years bribing developers to make stuff for HoloLens and still have nothing to show for it. This is the 'app gap' in full swing

Super happy that we've shipped 1.0 of Unity's visionOS support, including support for building mixed reality content!

I've sent the past few years working on this, and it's really gratifying to see people already creating some amazing content. We've also built some amazing underlying tech in PolySpatial that's going to enable some really cool things for Unity.

I've seen a few folks sharing a post about how Copilot leads to worse quality code. I think it's not that simple: I use it and I've had a lot of success with it, but the important thing is that the code I am writing with it is still my code, as I would write it. I just let it finish my "sentences".

As with any code generation tool - or indeed, with any snippet you find on StackOverflow or other website, or even in a book - it's really important to pay attention to what you're pasting in. (...)

Ask Microsoft: Are you using our personal data to train AI?

We had four lawyers, three privacy experts, and two campaigners look at Microsoft's new Service Agreement, and none of our experts could tell if Microsoft plans on using your personal data – including audio, video, chat, and attachments from 130 products, including Office, Skype, Teams, and Xbox – to train its AI models.
