I love that we call New Zealanders "kiwis." Anybody else do that elsewhere? Maybe we could call US residents wild turkeys or call Californians acorn woodpeckers. #birding
Singapore buying 2 new 600MW natural gas ("fossil gas," as @drvolts says) power plants by the end of the decade. Power demand is rising, "driven largely by electricity-intensive sectors such as advanced manufacturing, digital economy, and transport" and projected 3.7% annual growth.
"Several Fusion Industry Association member companies have a 'very detailed and long list of things and learnings that they’d like to get from ITER,' but processes to transfer this knowledge are lacking, [FIA CEO Andrew] Holland said."
Sure would love to see this Sigma zoom arrive on Canon mirrorless full-frame cameras. I'm sure there are compromises with geometric distortion or vignetting, and it's big, but the flexibility sounds good. Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 DG DN Art:
Yesterday on the grid: Early a.m. we charged our EV off the grid (blue). Midday, solar power mostly went to the grid (yellow). Evening, Powerwall battery pumped juice to the grid as part of a virtual power plant (green). Battery fully recharged by 1 p.m. today from solar. #Renewables#VPP#EnergyTransition#Solar#power
"Tornadogenesis" is my new favorite word and BTW, Tornado Alley has relocated east.
"Since 1951, by critical measures (tornadogenesis events, tornado days, and tornado path length), tornado activity has shifted away from the Great Plains and toward the Midwestern and Southeast U.S. In addition, tornadoes have trended away from the warm season, especially the summer, and toward the cold season since 1951."
Many of us photographers try to channel Ansel Adams' vision. Maybe someday attitudes will shift about AIs training at scale on millions of images, seeing it more like millions of photographers training at the individual level. Today, it's a fraught issue. #Adobe#AIhttps://www.threads.net/@anseladams/post/C7nOLfgP3Uf
No mention of fusion energy at least at the top level of in BNEF's New Energy Outlook 2024 report, which is no surprise given its unproven abilities. But at Commonwealth Fusion Systems, we're working hard to carve out a big wedge alongside solar and wind for zero-carbon electricity. Our first machine is under construction, and we want to put power on the grid in the early 2030s. https://about.bnef.com/new-energy-outlook/
In MacOS, I often take a screenshot, right-click on the thumbnail that pops up, then select "Save to Clipboard." I've been doing this for years but still have to parse the words carefully. Why oh why doesn't it just say "Copy"? So much easier at least for my brain to grok. #UI
If you're good with social media and are psyched by the prospect of using zero-carbon fusion energy to fight climate change, good news — we're hiring someone to work with me and others at Commonwealth Fusion Systems. We're a startup, but we're not vaporware: our factory is cranking out superconducting magnets and our first tokamak is under construction. HMU if you're curious, but here's the job post.
