@tdwllms1 @old_hippie Project 2025 isn't dependent upon Trump -- any "conservative" President would fit this scheme. And 2025 isn't the only year they can accomplish it, just the earliest. Stay vigilant, always.

Seeking eggplant recipe ideas, as I have one limp eggplant in the fridge and 8 eggplants growing in hydroponics (which may produce a massive amount of eggplant).

So far my repertoire includes 2 dishes:

  1. Eggplant Parmesan (Italian)
  2. Eggplant in Garlic Sauce (Chinese)

(the family hates eggplant, except me, so we never eat it 🤔 )

@scm @ai6yr @wendinoakland My cousin in Oakland stuggles mightily to garden. (Developer built a 5-story building on their south side, completely blocking the sun.) And yeah, not a bit of turf in his yard.

We (in Sacto) have about 2,000 sq ft of lawn remaining. Hoping to replace it with a pollinator garden in June, after which we'll be turf-free (and garden-heavy!)

@scm @ai6yr @wendinoakland How is your soil, @scm ? Ours is very heavy clay. Here's what worked for us.

When the soil is very dry, we cut the grass as short as the mower would go. Then used a string trimmer to cut everything down to bare soil. CLEAN THOROGHLY, everything you cut is potetially viable. Then we top dressed the soil with about 4-6" of good compost. DON'T work this into the soil, let the worms handle it. (continues)

@scm @ai6yr @wendinoakland We topped the compost with about 6" of wood chips(1). You can start planting in this right away, but the soil is gonna be like concrete initially. Plant stuff that you won't cry over if it dies.

We started planting our (bare root) fruit trees that winter, about 6 months after compost. We spent those 6 months pulling bermuda grass, a couple hours every weekend.

We did one more laborious weeding the first spring. (cont)

@scm @ai6yr @wendinoakland The bermuda grass (BG) has gotten easier to manage every year. We sarted on this project in 2019. NGL, the first ~18 months were a lot of hard work. But the last couple years we've only spent a few hours rooting out the little bit of BG that's come up.

Note(1): https://getchipdrop.com/ can be a good source of woodchips. Ideally contact them late spring/early summer. But better to flag down a tree service in your neighborhood.

@Gustodon @Jonathanglick I am fully opposed to fascists, authoritarians, and thus opposed to Trump.

But I also think Biden has done a very commendable job on the pandemic and bringing down inflation without crashing the economy. Not perfect, but absolutely better than the alternative.

Banner day today in the #butterfly world down here in Carlsbad. Several units on the hilltop in Calavera. Some newly hatched. These aren’t the typical spring tattletales, but I think they portend an early season down here.

Recently hatched Gray Hairstreak, perched with wings partly open on new greens on top of Calavera’s “Volcano.”
Spotted this Behr’s Metalmark between the two peaks of the “Volcano” but unable to get a closer shot.

I've read that dogs are "the only animals capable of reading the human gaze" dogs pay attention to where their people are looking and can be directed to targets with eye movements.

@ai6yr @BakerRL75 @cookiesinheaven I work at UC Davis, and been noticing an increasing number of people masking. Good start, but it's only maybe 10%.

I got the Covid vaccine a couple weeks ago, flu and RSV up next. Campus doesn't yet require RSV, but it's a good idea.

As a woman within the incredibly male dominated world of drystone walling, I have unfortunately experienced a lot of negative things that have really affected my mental health.

After taking a lot of time out, this week was a turning point. Working in beautiful rural Scotland & building this garden feature, I've been so enjoying drystone again. Working away happily in the sun, I realised that I can love and be involved in the craft without loving and being involved in the community.

The next project I’m going to start after trying to systemize the mutual aid network (without functioning like charities)

is a #COVIDsafe citizens coalition.
