Today, ta-da! Everyone was looking forward to this day for my son Drew- so important he have a success going into the pool for the first time this year. He surprised us all and did more physical activity at one time than ever, since October 7 when he was hospitalized with serious seizures. That day he became unable to use his walker anymore. He’s been weak and weaker. He barely can help himself lift up to stand and can’t hold his weight standing. Yet, look at him go in the water today!

@cobalt Good job, Drew (and Mom) ❤️

Mom
At least someone's Mom. On Mothers' Day 2024 I found gardens of sculptures and decorations filling 3 home lots in central Phoenix, AZ. Earlier I shared an iPhone shot of a side yard and this is one of the sculptures I was able to see inside the side yard. By Don Russell, an extraordinary Outsider Artist who doesn't sell his work. He just buys more homes there to be able to work on them and store them while his renters enjoy the atmosphere.

Found object sculpture of a woman made from wire, metal, tools, washers, emblems, and decorative metal pieces, detail view of sculpture about 9 feet tall. She looks like she has wild long hair and an ornate gown of wire patterns with dark brown skin showing. Her eyes look startled, round and wide.

3 am just tripped over damn dog laying across the threshold of my bedroom door. He’s never done that before and had been sleeping in his dog bed just 4 feet further at the end of my bed. I’d just made a quick trip to the bathroom and was not real awake. Jammed my hand and wrist hard trying to stop my fall by grabbing a bookshelf rack. Now featuring ice pack around my hand, hoping no tiny bone break or sprain. I’ve worried for years I could trip over this heavy anchor of a dog. Aaarrgh.

@cobalt Ouch! Hope nothing is broken and you feel better quickly!

For those following along, it’s Day 23 now of migraines. Doctor office finally called back to plan next step and MRI to see if there is a change or structural issue involved. I am relieved with this suggestion. But of course I’m in favor of “Let’s use this MRI to rule out problems” and opposed to being fearful of a “discovery”. I’d prefer not to have additional medical surprises at this time.

Years ago we were searching for information on a mapmaker, & couldn't find a thing. In a wild attempt, we searched her up, & she was still around!! And she was open to talking to us!!!
This changed everything.
We realized the history we were looking for might still be accessible & open to interview. We felt charged to find & interview makers that made an impact.
The most recent is an interview with a Denver legend in cartography, the founder of Pierson graphics.

@oldmapgallery Absolutely fascinating interview for anyone who loves maps. I love that Pierson had a circuitous path into mapping. Thank you for sharing, Curt!

Time for Drew to have a little fun and reward after all the tough times he has lived through in the last 3 weeks. We are going to a movie you may have heard of! Matinee pricing on Tuesdays is the best. $20 for three of us, and we picked seats smack dab center lower theatre.

Most of you will never see even one of these mineral specimens in person, so when I was invited to see this case, I asked if I could snap a picture. So, my friends, here are some of San Diego’s finest produced in the rough. .

I can’t believe I paid $45 for “tennis shoes”/sneakers. That was the sale price at 20% off. All I was looking for was “fat shoes” to wear when my lymphedema starts to make one or both ankles and feet swell. Needed something I could wear while driving and on short outings. Since I’m still not bending over well since surgery, the shoes needed to be almost slip on. Sandals I have a lot of but we’re still in cooler weather here. $45!!! Yikes! Doubt I ever paid that or more for any shoes, ever.

Here’s my last major find from the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show 2024, “Tiger Iron” from West Australia. It consists of alternating bands of golden Tiger Eye, silver metallic Hematite, and red jaspilite. This derivation of Banded Iron Formation is spectacular. Forgive the pic quality. It needed ☀️ https://www.aradon.com.au/tiger-iron/

It’s a nice day when you uncover treasures you own but haven’t seen for a while. This is inscribed to my father as a Christmas gift in 1928. Uncle Mel and Aunt Jane were gratified to see young “Junior” become a legendary reader and author. A first edition! I read it after plucking this book off his bookcase, maybe when I was 10 or so.

Here is my favorite find from Tucson collected just off the Catalina Highway below the eastern front of the Santa Catalina Mt.s, a metamorphic core complex. Sparklies are large clusters of biotite. Also contains feldspar and quartz. Anyone familiar with these rocks? Pardon my poor photography.

Biotite-rich, feldspar and quartz gneiss/mylonite?
