Pulled the whole thing out to clean up calcium buildup (1/2” along back). Instead of buying a wax ring, went with some rubber/foam "no wax" setup. It slightly constricts the hole, since the rubber goes through it (vs. wax which is just an outer gasket). I guess check back with me in 10-20 years?
Today's home disaster repair task: switched out the appliance hoses to the washing machine, from old rubber to new stainless steel braided hoses. Did you know they recommend changing these every 5 years?! (Mine were original to this 1990's era washing machine). #disasterremodeling#homerepair
Sigh, fixing a lousy attic hatch in the house and found a roof truss with termite damage. (though... not surprising, 60-80% of homes in Southern California have termite infestations, the last time I checked). #termites#homerepair
Yay! New water heater installed and working. Had a bit of a scare as it didn't come on when first hooked up, and it turned out to be a bad fuse. Not sure if it was due to a factory mishap or what, but luckily the closest hardware store had a replacement, and it came on after putting the new one in and didn't blow again.
I'm looking at #homerepair & #enerysaving#grants for a #relative. There's something not right about the amount of #data you have to 'share' & the #privacy you have to give-away just to find out about #home#grant eligibility.
Clearly there are criteria but surely there could be a list or an annonymous Q&A people can use to establish potential #eligibility. Access to #personaldata should only be required if an actual application is made.
Our stove/oven is starting to have problems. It's been repaired a couple of times in its 20 year life but it's probably time to replace it. I can't believe how expensive appliances have gotten. What if I don't need Wi-Fi and several other unnecessary things? There's not much between rental grade and bullshit level of bells and whistles.
I have made my family promise to hold an intervention for me if I buy one more #tool as it's likely a replica of one I already bought for a single, specialized project and we all know I'm going to hire someone younger anyway.
we picked paint colors and floors. i didn't have a good time trying to pick vanity lights for the bathrooms. (if there's a place you like to find light fixtures, let me know!) we have to go pick tile this week. and carpet for the bedrooms getting new carpet. I'm glad we're making progress on all of this, almost 11 months after Ian. #HomeRepair
I just discovered Mercury Stardust on YouTube and she is a delight. She is the Trans Handy Ma'am and has all kinda of renter friendly household repair tips. She is so compassionate and doesn't assume any prior knowledge. She also has tips on how to make your home safer from intruders, AGAIN renter friendly. Highly recommend to anyone who can't call for outside maintenance for your own safety. She calls it compassionate home repair tips and I love it. Check her out, you won't regret.
@enobacon So in theory the circuit boards and components are all potted (a layer of epoxy or something covering everything, making them waterproof; you can see the circuit board is shiny & reflective, and bubbles in the glue where the connector meets the board).
