If you had told my 10-year-old Blind girl self that in 30 years iโ€™d be taking pictures of a touchscreen with another touchscreen to find out from a conversational AI down on land how much longer the flight is; and that this is somehow easier than making the airline fix their website so i can read the damn time for myself; she would have been mad, but maybe not entirely surprised

What is fantastic about composting worms is that not only they are able to process an insane amount of waste and help us limit greenhouse gasses from landfills, but we often forget that they produce one of the most powerful manure that can be made at home.

If you apply the worm castings in your garden, you will boost the biology in your soils and provide a lot of nutrients for your plants.

If you want to do something for the #climate a worm bin is a very good start.

Very big cyber incident playing out at Snowflake, who describe themselves as โ€œAI Data Cloudโ€. They have a free trial where anybody can sign up and upload dataโ€ฆ and they have.

Threat actors have been scraping customer data using a tool called rapeflake, for about a month.

GossiTheDog,

The tl;dr of the Snowflake thing is mass scraping has been happening, but nobody noticed.. and they're pointing at customers for having poor credentials. It appears a lot of data has gone walkies from a bunch of orgs.

Snowflake is a big AI data company with a conference in the US next week, chances of that going ahead are interesting.

Like, seriously now. WHAT DO YOU THINK THE DEFINITION OF HARM REDUCTION IS?

"Harm reduction" is providing clean needles. It's making sure they don't trip while walking through the fire. It's providing a less harmful drug so that they don't self medicate with the more harmful drug.

It is not generally "putting out the fire."

Now. Again. Harm reduction is not sufficient, but it's not meant to be sufficient. It is a way of reducing harm in the meantime.

@shoq I'm amazed how many purported left-leaning people don't understand the concept of harm reduction. Adhering slavishly to an abstract standard of purity when doing so would lead to quantifiable negative consequences isn't praxis, it's privilege.

Hereโ€™s something that annoys me a bit when I reference a blocklist. I say this with the understanding that large instancesโ€™ block-reasons visible to non-members should serve as reference for non-members (other mods, prospective users, etc.):

Intentionally vague terms such as โ€œbad vibesโ€ make for a great reason to block on a user level, or even a small tight-knit instance. Without further elaboration, they make for terrible reasons to attach to moderation decisions for large more-open instances. Such vagueness seems like a rhetorical tool to launder a lack of block reason. Seeing โ€œVibesโ€ used this often on something thatโ€™s supposed to give transparency has weird vibes tells me something about how weโ€™ve normalized rhetorically deceptive language in moderation transparency. Just be honest and leave the reason blank instead of exposing the fact that you canโ€™t actually name whatโ€™s wrong with an instance.

A lack of explanation is fine. Itโ€™s honest: it means โ€œwe arenโ€™t making this reason publicโ€. It still gives prospective users useful information about which instances they can expect to connect to. But providing the appearance of a reason is something else. If I donโ€™t know why you blocked an instance with no block-reason, I can ask. Then Iโ€™ll know if I should act on it too. If the reason is โ€œvibesโ€ then it gives the impression that Iโ€™m supposed to just โ€œknowโ€, and that I shouldnโ€™t ask for receipts since it should be self-evident. It might be self-evident (a brief scroll through e.g. Poast makes its block-worthiness obvious), so say that instead to make it clear.

โ€œVibesโ€ isnโ€™t the only intentionally-vague term Iโ€™m aware of, and Iโ€™m guilty of propagating some in the past.

Again, this doesnโ€™t apply on small tight-knit instances whose users know what their mods meant. Do whatever your members want on those. โ€œVibesโ€ is also fine if you elaborate with specific reasons.

Oops, this got wordy. I think the length exaggerates how strongly I feel about this. TLDR: moderation transparency shouldnโ€™t select vague terms to hide a lack of reasons. It invites more questions while also discouraging people from asking them. Be honest about your unwillingness to give a public reason by not providing one.

There aren't many engineering tool opinions that will hurt my respect for someone's engineering ability, even if I think that the other tools are better. You like RTags over clangd? Okay, so long as you don't make me use it.

But when your opinion is "doing work to make clang-tidy happy isn't worth it", and the work you're referring to is things like respecting bugprone-unused-return-value, then my respect for your engineering decisions goes down.

smolwaffle,
@smolwaffle@union.place avatar

If you're an engineering leader and you're telling the team, repeatedly, through word and action, that code quality isn't important, don't then be surprised when you get a lot of hard to fix bugs and very low development velocity.

You can't say "all these code quality tools are useless", and personally commit a bunch of half working untested code, and then expect good results.

Depending on how you look at it, I either grew up in the periphery of the labor movement, or atop it, or surrounded by it. For a kid, labor issues don't really hold a lot of urgency - in places with mature labor movements, kids don't really have jobs, and the part-time jobs I had as a kid (paper route, cleaning a dance studio) were pretty benign.
